Amazon has taken down several recently released English dubs of three popular titles after receiving strong criticism from fans and people working in the industry.
Amazon Prime Video quickly pulled the English dubs of three anime series – No Game No Life: Zero, Vinland Saga, and Banana Fish – just days after they were added. These dubs were created using artificial intelligence, and fans and industry experts heavily criticized the poor quality. Many were disappointed that Amazon chose AI-generated voices instead of hiring professional voice actors.
Amazon’s Prime Video Removes AI Anime Releases of No Game No Life, Vinland Saga & Banana Fish
The decision sparked widespread criticism, even from prominent voice actors like Daman Mills, who has worked on popular series such as Evangelion, Dragon Ball Super, and One Piece. Mills publicly expressed his disappointment, stating, “After years of fans requesting an English dub of Banana Fish, to receive an AI-generated version is deeply disrespectful.” He questioned whether a sensitive story about queer trauma was given to an AI simply to avoid paying actors, and vowed to never work on another dub for the streaming service if the issue wasn’t addressed.
The 24-episode anime Banana Fish, created by studio MAPPA and released in 2018, is based on Akimi Yoshida’s beloved 1985 manga. It quickly gained a new generation of fans, alongside those who enjoyed the original manga. Set in mid-1980s New York City, the story centers on a character whose life has been deeply affected by trauma and tragedy, and who becomes entangled in a large criminal plot.
Despite dealing with difficult and often shocking themes, Banana Fish has gained a dedicated fanbase. Currently, it boasts a very high 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, though this is based on fewer than 50 user reviews. The original manga proved popular enough to inspire several spin-off stories and prequels, all contributing to the larger Banana Fish universe.
Based on the sixth volume of Yuu Kamiya’s No Game No Life light novels, No Game No Life: Zero is an animated film directed by Atsuko Ishizuka and produced by Madhouse. It’s a sweeping fantasy story that expands on the No Game No Life universe, taking place over thousands of years and introducing Riku and Shuvi – characters who are essentially the ancestors of the series’ main heroes, Sora and Shiro.
The movie No Game No Life: Zero opened at number seven in Japanese theaters in 2017, but its popularity quickly declined after the first weekend. Although it earned over ¥700 million during its time in cinemas, the film generally received average reviews from critics.
