Michael J. Fox shared that when he was cast in Back to the Future, it led to another actor losing their job. Fox took over the lead role from Eric Stoltz after filming had already begun, juggling the movie with his TV series, Family Ties. It turns out that because Marty McFly was recast, the actress playing his girlfriend, Jennifer, also had to be replaced.
In his new memoir, “Future Boy,” Michael J. Fox discusses the prejudice he faced due to his height, explaining how it made him a target for bullying. He admits he initially used it to his advantage in his career, but later found it became a problem when he started taking on leading roles. Fox reflects on how his height affected him throughout his career.
Being small helped me when I was a young actor playing children, but it became a disadvantage later in my career when I auditioned for romantic roles with taller actresses.
Michael J. Fox recalls facing height-related prejudice during the making of Back to the Future. When he took over the lead role from Eric Stoltz, the actress playing his girlfriend, Melora Hardin, was let go. Fox explains that Hardin was actually taller than him, and executives worried audiences wouldn’t believe they were a couple if he appeared shorter than his onscreen love interest.
I’m sorry to say that this bias unintentionally impacted another actor in Back to the Future – Melora Hardin, a very talented actress who originally played Marty’s girlfriend, Jennifer, opposite Eric Stoltz. Melora was a few inches taller than me, and she was replaced after I was cast as Marty. Bob Zemeckis initially wondered if audiences would overlook our height difference, but when he asked the women on the crew, they told him that in high school, popular, tall girls usually don’t choose shorter guys.
No one asked for my opinion, but I would have risen to Melora’s defense.
Melora Hardin Thrived Without ‘Back to the Future’

Claudia Wells originally played Jennifer in Back to the Future because she was close in height to Michael J. Fox. However, she wasn’t in the sequels; Elisabeth Shue took over the role. The writers didn’t have much for Jennifer to do in those films, and she even spent a large part of the story unconscious. Despite not continuing with the Back to the Future franchise, Claudia Wells has still had a successful acting career.
Most people recognize Kate Flannery from her role as Meredith Palmer in the popular show The Office, where she was known as Michael Scott’s boss and, later, his girlfriend. But she’s also been in several movies, including Disney’s Tower of Terror, 27 Dresses, and 17 Again with Zac Efron. You might also recognize her from TV shows like Monk, where she played Trudy Monk, Transparent, and The Bold Type. Though she wasn’t in Back to the Future, Kate has definitely built a successful and memorable career for herself.
It’s unclear if casting a star from The Office as Jennifer in the sci-fi film would have been a mistake. However, there’s a well-known preference in Hollywood for actors who fit certain physical ideals. Thankfully, those old standards are changing, and many are now advocating for more diverse casting choices, which could mean concerns like the recent Back to the Future recasting will eventually seem outdated.
