With Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios is trying a new approach, and production designer Gavin Bocquet is leading the way. He recently explained that the movie will rely less on computer-generated effects and more on real sets and filming techniques, a significant change for the studio.

Gavin Bocquet, the production designer for Avengers: Doomsday, has stated that the film will feel different than previous Marvel movies. It will rely more on real sets and effects filmed during production, rather than relying heavily on computer-generated imagery.
According to a recent interview with Young Indy Chronicles, Marvel’s Thunderbolts post-credits scene, which hints at the Avengers: Doomsday storyline, was filmed using practical sets and minimal digital effects. Editor Bocquet explained that almost everything seen on set was real, allowing actors to move freely and even be filmed in front of the in-universe screens. This is a departure from Marvel’s usual reliance on blue screens and computer-generated environments.
Bocquet explained that the scene was filmed with very little editing afterward, because they only had three days for post-production. Instead of adding effects later, they built a realistic backdrop of New York City to be visible through the window. A monitor showed a visual of the spaceship approaching. Because of the tight schedule, almost everything you see in the scene was filmed directly, without relying on post-production. Bocquet noted that this approach even surprised the actors, who said it was the first time on a Marvel set where everything was captured in-camera.
The emphasis on practical effects will remain consistent in Avengers: Doomsday. According to Bocquet, the filmmakers used real sets and painted backdrops for about 80% of the indoor scenes, building them whenever possible. This approach, a departure from relying heavily on blue screens, was chosen to enhance both the actors’ performances and the overall look of the film.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo were fans of this technique, according to production designer Dominic Bocquet. He explained they used it whenever they could, considering the large scope of the Marvel films. Bocquet, drawing on his experience with The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, believes filmmaking is about creating illusions, and practical effects should be prioritized when feasible.
