Scheduled for release in spring 2027, Star Wars: Starfighter will be the 13th film in the Star Wars saga and will star Ryan Gosling. Interestingly, thanks to Gosling’s involvement, Starfighter will be the first Star Wars movie to do something that no film in the franchise has done before.
The announcement of the lead actor for Starfighter in April 2025 immediately created a lot of buzz. However, some dedicated Star Wars fans have expressed concerns that casting a major celebrity like Ryan Gosling could take attention away from the story itself.
Throughout the history of Star Wars, many of its most iconic actors were not well-known when they were first cast. The creators of the franchise intentionally avoided casting established Hollywood stars in leading roles. However, with the casting of Ryan Gosling in Star Wars: Starfighter, this long-standing practice has changed.
Star Wars Has Historically Cast Unknown Actors For Its Lead Roles
When we look at the original Star Wars trilogy’s cast, it’s remarkable how unknown Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were before landing the starring roles of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. Hamill hadn’t been in any films before, and Fisher’s only prior movie role was a small part in Shampoo.
The same could be said for Jake Lloyd and Natalie Portman in the prequel films, and Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in the sequel films. While Felicity Jones and Alden Ehrenreich, who starred in Rogue One and Solo respectively, were established actors, they weren’t nearly as famous as Ryan Gosling before joining the Star Wars universe.
Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter Role Indicates Disney’s New Strategy
When details about Star Wars: Starfighter were announced in April, everyone immediately started talking about Ryan Gosling. His casting suggests Disney is planning a new path for the franchise.
Let’s be honest, the days of Star Wars launching completely unknown actors into superstardom seem to be over. Disney’s clearly shifting gears, looking for stars who already are stars for their upcoming films. But with Ryan Gosling, they’ve landed someone who genuinely understands and excels in sci-fi – a solid, proven performer who’s a great fit for the universe.
Ryan Gosling’s work in Blade Runner 2049 was a huge success, especially considering how beloved the first film was and how difficult it seemed to follow up. Plus, his roles in space-themed movies like First Man and Project Hail Mary make him a great fit for a galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars: Starfighter Can Be The Start Of A New Era For The Franchise
Star Wars: Starfighter was the first movie in the series to feature a completely new story since the original Star Wars (later known as A New Hope) came out in 1977. All the films in between had included characters from previous movies.
Considering the film is launching on the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars, it feels like a fitting moment to begin a fresh chapter for the franchise. Starring Ryan Gosling – arguably the most recognizable lead actor Star Wars has ever had – Star Wars: Starfighter has the potential to be Lucasfilm’s most captivating project of the 21st century yet.
