Michael C. Hall is known for his captivating performance as Dexter, and he delivered another strong lead role in a 2018 show. Though this UK-based series didn’t reach the same popularity as the Dexter franchise, it’s still a good watch for fans of the actor, who has been playing the iconic serial killer since 2006. Available on Netflix, the show offers a different side of Hall’s acting range than what he typically displays in the crime drama.
While Michael C. Hall appeared in many episodes of Six Feet Under from 2001 to 2005, he truly became a star thanks to his role as Dexter Morgan. After Dexter concluded in 2013, Hall continued to work, occasionally taking on prominent roles to remind audiences he was still acting. A notable example was his portrayal of President Kennedy in The Crown in 2018. He didn’t return to the role of Dexter until 2021 with Dexter: New Blood. However, the year after appearing in The Crown, Hall landed a lead role in a project that particularly resonated with Dexter fans.
Netflix’s ‘Safe’ Is Perfect for Those Who Love Michael C. Hall as Dexter
In 2018, Netflix released the entire first season of Safe all at once, letting viewers watch all eight episodes back-to-back. The show’s suspenseful plot made it perfect for binge-watching. Michael C. Hall stars as Tom Delaney, a British surgeon still grieving the death of his wife. He’s also desperately searching for his missing 16-year-old daughter, Jenny (played by Amy James-Kelly). As you might expect, Safe introduces several characters who appear to be involved in Jenny’s disappearance, and their connections seem too obvious to dismiss.
Michael C. Hall delivers a compelling performance, showcasing a different range of acting skills than he often uses for his iconic role as Dexter. Interestingly, both Tom and Dexter share a similar underlying awkwardness, which Hall portrays exceptionally well. While some British viewers might notice his accent isn’t perfect, it’s good enough not to pull you out of the story. More importantly, Hall is able to express genuine emotion as Tom in a way that’s often limited by Dexter’s need to hide his true feelings and act according to others’ expectations.
If you’re a fan of Dexter and eagerly awaiting Season 2 of Dexter: New Blood, Safe is a good show to watch in the meantime. With only eight episodes, it’s either a quick and easy binge, or it might feel too short. However, the show’s single-season run actually works well considering its exciting conclusion. Safe initially gained attention, but seems to have been somewhat forgotten since it first came out in 2018.
‘Safe’ Came at the Perfect Time for ‘Dexter’ Fans Who Missed the Show
The Netflix Show Continues To Serve Hall’s Fans the Same Way (When They Discover It)

Netflix
When Safe dropped, it had been five years since Dexter signed off the air, and the New Blood revival was still years away. Honestly, Dexter fans were in a tough spot – rewatching the original series endlessly and getting more and more frustrated with that finale, which, let’s face it, didn’t give Michael C. Hall’s character the ending he deserved. And outside of a few voice roles as Toffee on Star vs. the Forces of Evil, fans like me hadn’t really had anything new from Hall to really dive into and enjoy.
For fans of Dexter and Michael C. Hall, Safe was a welcome show when it first came out. While things are different now – with three more Dexter shows either already released or still in production – Safe remains a worthwhile watch. It provided a satisfying conclusion for viewers who were disappointed by the cancellation of Original Sin, and it’s genuinely a good psychological thriller even if you’ve never seen Dexter. Anyone who enjoys that genre will likely find it enjoyable.
Just like Safe filled the gap for fans when Dexter was off the air, it continues to be a good option between seasons of the popular show. Importantly, Safe managed to deliver a satisfying conclusion without needing multiple attempts or disappointing its audience. While it’s wonderful to have Michael C. Hall back as Dexter, Safe still stands out as a perfect example of how to end a series well. You can watch Safe on Netflix.
