George R.R. Martin Unveils Stunning New Cover for ‘A Song of Ice And Fire’

Recently, new artwork from the A Song of Ice and Fire book series was revealed on the cover of an upcoming calendar. These beloved fantasy novels inspired the hugely popular HBO series Game of Thrones. Over the years, fans have enjoyed special illustrated editions and other releases showcasing official artwork from the books.

As a huge fan of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, I was really excited to see that Penguin Random House just revealed a calendar for 2027! Even though it’s still a ways off, they’ve already shown off the cover, and it looks amazing – it features brand new artwork from the world of Westeros that I’ve never seen before. It’s a nice little treat for fans while we wait for the next book (hopefully!).

The calendar’s cover art, created by Tyler Jacobson, depicts a soldier in armor raising a sword engulfed in flames. The scene suggests a fierce battle, and the soldier’s armor is decorated with stars and purple lightning.

As a huge fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, I was so excited to see Beric Dondarrion featured on this calendar! He’s such a memorable character, especially with that incredible flaming sword – a result of his dedication to the Lord of Light. You always knew it was him, too, with his distinctive armor and shield. And I absolutely love the imagery of House Dondarrion – that forked purple lightning against a black, starry sky is just fantastic.

The calendar features 13 different artworks: one for each month, plus an extra special poster included for buyers.

PRH says the calendar will feature artwork highlighting key characters, families, and battles from the history of Westeros.

Artist Tyler Jacobson has created stunning new portraits of some of the most memorable characters from Westeros. These reimagined images feature both familiar faces and characters we’ve never seen before, capturing everything from quiet, personal moments to epic battles and complex relationships – the people who truly made Westeros the unforgettable world we love.

A new calendar featuring artwork from the A Song of Ice and Fire series will be released on July 21, 2026. This release conveniently coincides with the publication of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and the premiere of Season 3 of House of the Dragon.

A Song of Ice and Fire’s Special Artwork Through the Years

Before the TV show Game of Thrones became a massive hit, George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series was already well-loved by fantasy readers. But the show’s popularity turned the books into a major phenomenon, and over the last ten years, numerous beautifully illustrated special editions have been published, even though the series remains unfinished.

In 2024, a collector’s box set featuring the first five books of the A Song of Ice and Fire series was released. Each book in the set had a distinctive cover design; for example, A Game of Thrones featured a direwolf.

Each book’s spine design matched its cover art. For example, the spine of A Clash of Kings showed a lion’s roaring mouth – the symbol of House Lannister. A Storm of Swords displayed a stag, representing House Baratheon, while A Feast for Crows featured a crow, and A Dance With Dragons showed a dragon’s eye.

Many book series are sold in boxed sets, and publishers often design these sets so that the book spines create a larger image when displayed together. The popular series A Song of Ice and Fire is one such example. Its special set includes six books—the five main novels plus Fire & Blood, the history book that the House of the Dragon TV show is based on—and when arranged, the spines spell out the series title, also forming a complete picture.

Each book in the set uses the same cover art, but with a different title for each novel. Juniper Books released the set as a collectible item rather than for everyday reading, and it originally cost $389.99. With only 50 sets made, it’s a very rare collection.

The Folio Society released another special edition set with unique covers inspired by iconic images from the books themselves. Similar to other editions, each book in the set showcased different symbols like a direwolf or a stag. All the books shared a consistent spine design – gray with gold lettering.

This collection was special because each novel was presented in multiple volumes, all featuring unique illustrations.

While most versions of the novels still include artwork from the A Song of Ice and Fire series, it’s not as elaborate or striking as what you’ll find in the special editions.

Typically, book covers feature just the title, George R.R. Martin’s name, and a simple background design, often with a symbolic image.
