Robert Redford’s Daughter Takes Action Against AI Tribute “Fabrications”

Beloved actor Robert Redford passed away in September, prompting many heartfelt tributes to his memorable work, including films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Ordinary People. However, some of these tributes appear to have been created using artificial intelligence, drawing on images from his long career which began in the 1960s. His daughter, Amy Redford, publicly criticized these AI-generated creations, calling them “fabrications” in an Instagram post.

Redford expressed gratitude for the immense love and support her family received from fans worldwide, especially those who admired her father’s celebrated films. She explained that her recent post was prompted by AI-created tributes to him, noting he had no involvement in their creation. She highlighted that these AI-generated images – including depictions of funerals, tributes, and quotes – were completely made up.

It’s been very upsetting to discover that AI has been used to create fake funerals, memorials, and even quotes attributed to my family. Seeing depictions of my father, who can’t speak for himself, and portrayals of my family that are negative and untrue adds to the pain we’re already feeling as we grieve. We’re supporting each other through this difficult time.

Redford notes the lack of a public memorial service and emphasizes the family’s ongoing grief. She then poses a poignant question, drawing on her own experience to highlight a troubling aspect of artificial intelligence.

Every family deserves the chance to grieve and remember a loved one in a way that feels right for them and respects their traditions.

I truly believe AI is here to stay, and I really want to see it used openly and honestly. A lot of the technology was built with positive goals in mind, and I hope we can keep it that way.

I simply ask, what if this was you?

Use this as your guiding principle: prioritize genuine human connection. Let authenticity be what inspires us and brings us together, as it’s what we all truly desire.

AI Has Been Causing Problems For Hollywood

The controversy over AI-generated tributes to Robert Redford isn’t new for Hollywood. There’s been growing criticism of AI’s use in marketing – fans recently called out A24’s Civil War poster for this – but the issue goes deeper. The Screen Actors Guild is particularly concerned about AI potentially replacing actors altogether. Morgan Freeman, for example, has voiced concerns about AI replicating his voice, stating it feels like having his work stolen.

The entertainment world is buzzing about Tilly Norwood, an actress created entirely by artificial intelligence. Although AI actors aren’t yet ready to star in full-length movies or TV shows, Tilly represents a potentially unsettling future for Hollywood and the entire industry. As the Redford family mourns, they—and others—may soon find themselves needing to address the ethical concerns surrounding AI, even when celebrating the legacies of loved ones.
