Jake Gyllenhaal’s action movie, Ambulance, is currently very popular on Netflix. Released in early 2022, the film—which is a remake of a 2005 Danish movie with the same title—follows two brothers who steal an ambulance and take hostages, leading to a dangerous and thrilling chase.
As a huge movie fan, I was really excited for Ambulance – it definitely had that classic Michael Bay feel, and Jake Gyllenhaal was fantastic, bringing a ton of energy to the screen. It’s a shame it didn’t really connect with audiences though. It opened with around $8.7 million, and ultimately made about $52.3 million worldwide. Considering it cost around $40 million to make, it just didn’t perform as well as everyone hoped.
The 2022 film Ambulance is gaining popularity on Netflix again, according to FlixPatrol. It began climbing the U.S. charts on November 24th and has already reached #2. As of November 27th, it remains in that spot, just behind the new holiday movie Champagne Problems.
The film Ambulance, featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza González, along with a supporting cast including Garret Dillahunt, Keir O’Donnell, and others, has a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 255 critic reviews. However, audiences seem to like it more, giving it an 87% score.
Even those who weren’t huge fans of Ambulance agreed it’s the type of movie theaters need to attract audiences beyond big-budget blockbusters and animated films. It’s a mid-budget film starring a well-known actor, offering a fresh take on a familiar story.
It’s being debated whether mid-budget thrillers, like the movie Ambulance, can still find an audience with so many streaming options available. While streaming originals such as Netflix’s Carry On and Rebel Ridge prove there’s still a demand for this type of movie, people aren’t necessarily going to theaters to see them anymore.
There’s still hope things will even out eventually. While some thrillers are perfectly enjoyable to watch at home, others – the ones with big action and impressive visuals – really deserve to be seen in theaters first, before becoming popular on streaming services. That makes the box office performance of Ambulance, and its recent increase in attention, a little disappointing.
