Lee Child, the author of the popular Jack Reacher book series, has announced he’s retiring from writing the novels. However, the series will continue, with his brother, Andrew Child, taking over the writing duties.
Lee Child consistently created a captivating world with his Jack Reacher books, so it’s easy to understand his choices. And with Andrew Child now continuing the series, fans have plenty to be excited about.
Lee Child leaving the series presents a major challenge for the entire Reacher franchise. It’s still early to tell how this change will ultimately affect the brand, but it’s clear that it creates a significant issue.
Lee Child’s Confirmed Exit From Reacher Harms The Franchise In One Way
Before becoming the sole author of the Jack Reacher series, Andrew Child collaborated with Lee Child on several books, such as Exit Strategy, In Too Deep, and The Sentinel. Although the response to these books has been mixed, Andrew Child has successfully maintained the distinctive style, pacing, and intensity that readers expect from the Reacher universe.
While a change of author isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the series, the biggest issue is that it’s gone on for too long. There are now 30 Jack Reacher novels, and it feels like a natural place to end the story. From a realistic perspective, Jack Reacher would likely be old enough to retire by now.
Now that Lee Child has stepped away, it might have been a good time to end the book series. However, continuing the story for too long risks losing readers’ interest. If the books become repetitive, the exciting elements that once made them stand out could lose their impact.
Lee Child’s Original Reacher Ending Plan Sounds Far Better Than More Books
MovieStillsDB
Lee Child originally had very different plans for the Jack Reacher series. He told Bruce Whitfield that he first imagined Reacher dying in a grim way – bleeding out in a dirty motel bathroom in a book called Die Lonely. After deciding that was too harsh, he even considered a more symbolic ending where Reacher would find a home and settle down with a dog.
It’s easy to see why these plans were ultimately abandoned before Lee Child passed the Reacher book series on to his brother. Looking back, killing off Jack Reacher would have likely been controversial, but it could have provided a satisfying and logical ending to the story. If done right, Reacher’s death might have even cemented his status as a legend, similar to characters like John Wick, Tony Stark, and Wolverine.
Prime Video’s Reacher Might Still Benefit From The Reacher Books’ New Direction
The Prime Video series Reacher could continue to draw inspiration from the evolving storylines in the original books. With new books being released regularly, the Reacher universe stays active even when there aren’t new seasons of Reacher or Neagley being made. This means fans always have fresh content to enjoy between seasons of the show.
Plus, with so many more books in the Jack Reacher series, the Prime Video show Reacher would have plenty of material for future seasons and could potentially continue for even longer.
