Unlike most Marvel movies, Avatar films are events people plan ahead for. Viewers specifically seek out the best viewing experiences – 3D, IMAX, and large-format screens. There aren’t hidden details or ‘Easter Eggs’ like in Marvel movies that drive fans to see it immediately. When looking at the opening for the new Avatar film, the domestic opening of Avatar: The Way of Water represents the highest possible comparison point.

Let’s talk box office numbers. The original Avatar absolutely blew everyone away when it hit theaters, raking in $77 million just during its opening weekend. Ultimately, it became the highest-grossing film ever, with a staggering $2.9 billion worldwide.
