A24’s Eternity 2 Chances Teased By Director

A24’s new movie, Eternity, is a fantasy romance that might confuse some viewers, but the director suggests he may offer explanations later on.

David Freyne, in an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley while promoting Eternity, hinted that some plot points were intentionally left open-ended, potentially setting up possibilities for a sequel, Eternity 2.

When questioned about subtle clues in the dialogue suggesting deeper layers to the characters and world of Eternity, Freyne responded, “You don’t need to explain every little thing.” However, the director also clarified, “There is an explanation for everything, though.”

The film Eternity follows Joan, played by Elizabeth Olsen, who has died and finds herself in the afterlife. There, she’s faced with a difficult choice: spend forever with her new partner, Barry (Miles Teller), or reunite with her ex-husband, Luke (Callum Turner), who has been waiting a long time for her.

The film is set in a kind of space station for the deceased, where people who have died meet with guides who help them get used to the afterlife and figure out how they want to spend eternity. According to Freyne, this setup offers a lot of potential for future stories.

The director explained to ScreenRant that being immersed in the Star Wars universe for a long time, like Luke Skywalker, makes things increasingly strange and offers endless possibilities for storytelling.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph plays Anna, who helps people after they die. While the show’s creator, Freyne, shared Anna’s history with the actress, they intentionally kept her backstory a mystery to viewers.

He explained that a particular line of dialogue suggests Anna is reflecting on her own past and the reasons she remained in a difficult situation. He and his co-star, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, discussed Anna’s history extensively, deciding not to directly show it in the film but allowing it to shape her character’s motivations and behavior.

According to Freyne, Randolph wasn’t interested in lengthy explanations. She simply wanted to know Anna’s state of mind while she was alive, the reasons Anna decided to remain, and why others might make the same choice.

This aligns with director Freyne’s approach to storytelling in films. As she explained, “I really appreciated that, and I enjoy when movies leave some questions unanswered.”

ScreenRant’s review of Eternals acknowledged that the movie ends with some unresolved plot points, but was generally positive.

The actors in Eternity have great chemistry, making it a generally fun romantic comedy. While the story could have been developed more, the movie shines when it focuses on the cast’s strong performances rather than a complex plot.
