Recently unveiled concept art showed some truly frightening early designs for the main villain in the upcoming Superman (2025) movie. While James Gunn’s Superman introduces a lot of exciting heroes – including DC Comics favorites like Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl – the film also boasts a diverse and impressive roster of villains drawn from the comics.
David Corenswet’s Superman faced off against classic villains like Lex Luthor and The Engineer, as well as some more obscure but powerful enemies. One particularly unsettling villain was Mr. Handsome – a character resembling Slenderman who guarded Lex Luthor’s otherworldly prison. Mr. Handsome brought a genuine horror movie vibe to the series, with his pale skin, hollow eyes, and disturbingly twisted appearance.
It might be surprising to learn that Lex Luthor’s appearance in the movie could have been even more disturbing. A new book about the making of the film, written by Legacy Effects, reveals several unused designs for the character’s frightening experiment, as noted by X user Mikhail Villarreal.

Early designs for the villain known as Mister Handsome – often considered Superman’s most frightening foe – featured even more alien characteristics. Some of these concepts were so extreme they removed recognizable human features like eyes and a mouth, going further than the final movie version.
In some versions of the story, the character is kept alive by a machine, despite the experiment being a failure. He then assists in taking people to Lex’s private prison.

I finally got around to watching the new Superman movie, and honestly, it was a great start to James Gunn’s vision for the DCU. David Corenswet really embodies the Man of Steel, and seeing his first showdown with Lex Luthor was fantastic. If you missed it in theaters this summer, good news – it’s now streaming on HBO Max!
Will Mr. Handsome Ever Return to the DCU
Though many enjoyed Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman, his role in the future of the DC Universe is currently uncertain, leaving fans wondering what’s next.
Following the events of Superman, the guard who oversaw Lex Luthor’s otherworldly prison is no longer employed. Superman and the Justice League stopped Luthor’s attempt to take over the world, which resulted in the destruction of his prison, the release of all its inmates, and Luthor’s imprisonment at Belle Reve Prison.
Mr. Handsome’s fate is uncertain. He wasn’t among the prisoners LexCorp released, and may have been caught in the black hole created when Superman escaped. This leaves his survival in question.
Maybe he was transported to the same place Ultraman ended up at the film’s conclusion and might come back in the future.
Honestly, the Mr. Handsome we saw in James Gunn’s new DC movie was so different from the comic book version! He just didn’t have that same intimidating vibe. I’m hoping that wherever he ends up, he’ll develop into the full-blown crime lord we all know and love from the comics. He’s got potential, but he needs to become Mr. Handsome!
Considering his link to Lex Luthor—it seems they were close—he might return seeking revenge. He could embark on a mission to get back at those who imprisoned his creator and free Lex from his confinement.
