Ralph Ineson, who stars in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” directly responded to criticism from Rob Liefeld about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Liefeld, the co-creator of Deadpool, has voiced concerns about the MCU, particularly related to the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie.
On X (formerly Twitter), Rob Liefeld shared a GIF from The Fantastic Four and criticized the visual effects, saying they looked noticeably poor. Paul Ineson, who portrays Galactus in the movie, playfully responded with “Rent free” and a laughing emoji. You can see the exchange below.
Rob Liefeld isn’t the only one who’s pointed out problems with the visual effects in Marvel Cinematic Universe films, particularly lately. However, his criticism carries extra weight because of his past work with the franchise.
Rob Liefeld’s disagreements with Marvel Studios stem from a request he made regarding the credits for Deadpool & Wolverine. He asked for a specific credit, but it wasn’t granted, and his name appeared in the standard end credits alongside other comic creators, rather than receiving special recognition.
Following the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, Rob Liefeld’s frustration with Marvel Studios grew. He discovered his family and he weren’t invited to the afterparty, and he’s stated that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige didn’t acknowledge him, even though they were near each other on the red carpet.
Liefeld has since stated he ended his relationship with Marvel and, on his podcast, expressed his belief that the events surrounding the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere were a deliberate attempt to undermine him. He also criticized Kevin Feige, claiming he doesn’t treat comic book creators fairly.
Several months after its release, Rob Liefeld criticized the movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He shared a photo of a mostly empty IMAX cinema, claiming the film wasn’t attracting repeat viewers because it was “incredibly boring and unengaging.”
Even though Rob Liefeld had some issues with it, The Fantastic Four: First Steps generally received good reviews, earning an 86% score from critics and a 90% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. While opinions on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Galactus were somewhat divided, most people agreed it was a significant improvement compared to how Galactus was portrayed in the 2007 film, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
While not a massive blockbuster for Marvel, the film still earned around $520 million globally, even though ticket sales fell off significantly after its opening weekend.
At the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Galactus was beaten and left lost in space, leaving his role in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films uncertain. Meanwhile, the Fantastic Four themselves are set to return in Avengers: Doomsday, where they’ll face off against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.
