The strong opening weekend of Wicked: For Good proves the Wicked franchise is still incredibly popular. With talk of potential future films, the franchise seems to have a bright future, and successful, widely-loved franchises often expand into theme parks.
Universal theme parks have already featured elements of Wicked, like meet-and-greets with Glinda and Elphaba and displays of costumes from the show. Now, there’s growing excitement about the possibility of a full *Wickedthemed land being built at one of the parks, and director Jon M. Chu has some promising concepts.
Wicked Almost Had A Theme Park Ride In The Movie
Speaking with Patrick Dougall, director of Wicked, Jon M. Chu discussed the fact that something that greatly resembled a theme park attraction almost appeared in Wicked: Part One, and if a Wicked theme park land ever did come to pass, he would love to see his original idea become a real ride. He described it, saying:
I think it would be amazing to experience Whizomania as a ride. You’d sit inside a spinning machine that’s designed to be part of an immersive show. It would really put you in the action – spinning you around, tilting you, and using mirrors to make it feel like the show is happening all around you, even above and below. It sounded like a wild and fun experience!
Jon M. Chu initially envisioned the “Whizomania” sequence in Wicked Part One – where Elphaba and Glinda first enter the Emerald City – as being built much like a traditional dark ride. In fact, if someone were designing a Wizard of Oz attraction, a tour through the Emerald City would almost certainly be a key feature.
Chu has even bigger ideas! He’s not just proposing a Wickedthemed ride, but a whole Wicked* land, complete with restaurants and shops. Universal Creative should seriously consider hiring him. He went on to say:
It would be amazing to have a cafe at Universal where you could get coffee and small treats all in one place. Imagine being able to smell the tulips and even take a poppy with you – that would be so much fun! Universal, please make this happen!
Universal may indeed get on that very soon.
A Wicked Land From Universal Destinations and Experiences Is A Strong Possibility
Universal’s theme park division is growing rapidly. While Epic Universe just opened a few months ago, two more parks are currently being built. Epic Universe was designed to be expanded easily, and many believe a themed area based on the musical Wicked could be added soon. There’s also a possibility Wicked will be featured at the new Universal United Kingdom theme park.
There are several options for what could come next. The Lost Continent area at Universal Islands of Adventure is slated for demolition, and while we don’t yet know what will replace it, rumors point to two main possibilities: a Legend of Zelda-themed land, thanks to Universal’s partnership with Nintendo, or a land based on the popular musical, Wicked.
As a huge Wicked fan, I’m thrilled to see so much excitement for a potential theme park land! It’s clear Universal is paying attention to all of us, and honestly, it feels almost certain we’ll get one eventually. The big question now is just where they’ll build it and when we can finally experience the magic for ourselves.
