The Star Wars films aren’t just popular – they’ve defined generations. The galaxy far, far away keeps growing with new shows on Disney+. And there are more Star Wars movies on the way, including one called Starfighter directed by Shawn Levy. The studio recently gave Levy some guidance, and it’s a point I completely understand.
Filming for Star Wars: Starfighter began in August, and fans are eager to see what director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) will do with the franchise. During an interview on The Business podcast, Levy shared the guidance he received from Disney and Lucasfilm, explaining that they told him:
We’re given complete creative freedom – the only direction is to innovate. Whenever I suggest using a character from a previous work, the response is always the same: ‘Let’s create something fresh and original.’
This is really exciting news about Starfighter. Instead of forcing connections to the existing Star Wars stories, the director is being encouraged to create something completely fresh. I think that’s precisely what the Star Wars universe needs to thrive going forward.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited when they started making standalone movies like Rogue One and Solo. It was a cool way to explore the universe beyond the main saga. I was disappointed when they stopped after Solo didn’t do so well in theaters, but I’m thrilled to hear Starfighter is bringing that idea back! It sounds like they’re really encouraging Levy to take some risks and try new things with the franchise, which is exactly what we need!

Disney+ offers access to all things Star Wars. You can start streaming with ads for as little as $11.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 a month, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here.
It’s been a while since a Star Wars movie was in theaters – the last one, The Rise of Skywalker, came out some time ago. Since then, the franchise has been expanding through live-action shows on Disney+. However, that’s about to change with new movies on the horizon: both The Mandalorian and Grogu and Starfighter are coming soon, and these films will tell standalone stories not tied to a larger trilogy.

While details are scarce about Shawn Levy’s first Star Wars film, the impressive cast is generating a lot of buzz. Ryan Gosling heads up the group, which also features Amy Adams, Mia Goth, and Matt Smith. We don’t yet know what roles they’ll play, but the movie already seems promising.
Shawn Levy is known for directing popular projects in various genres, like Stranger Things and the hugely successful Deadpool & Wolverine. Because of this, fans are excited to see his take on the Star Wars universe.
Get ready to return to a galaxy far, far away! First, The Mandalorian and Grogu will be in theaters on May 22nd, 2026. Then, look forward to Star Wars: Starfighter arriving on May 28th, 2027.
