Benedict Cumberbatch recently clarified what’s next for his character, Doctor Strange, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His last appearance was in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where he battled Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and protected America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). After defeating Wanda, a scene after the credits showed Strange traveling to the Dark Dimension with Clea to repair a problem he had created. He hasn’t been seen in the MCU since entering the Dark Dimension.
The epic Multiverse Saga will conclude with two major movies: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. While Benedict Cumberbatch’s character, Doctor Strange, wasn’t initially listed among the cast for Doomsday, a recent statement from the actor should reassure fans that he will be involved.
While promoting his new film, The Thing with Feathers, Benedict Cumberbatch told Collider he has a good idea of what the future holds for his character, Doctor Strange, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also confirmed that fans will absolutely see Doctor Strange return in future Marvel projects.
“He’s coming. At some point. Yeah, you definitely will [see him again].”
In a recent Smartless interview, Cumberbatch strongly suggested he’ll be returning for Avengers: Secret Wars. He mentioned having “other huge commitments involving cloaks” planned for next year, which coincides with the expected filming schedule for the movie.
“[Next year], there are other huge commitments involving cloaks floating about.”
When asked about being left out of the initial cast announcement for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, Cumberbatch jokingly suggested they simply hadn’t included enough seating.
Benedict Cumberbatch has recently confirmed that Doctor Strange will play a key role in the ongoing Multiverse Saga. His character’s expertise in magic and the multiverse is needed to help explain and address the dangerous merging of different Earths. Doctor Strange will be a vital ally to Earth’s heroes as they battle Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Directed by the Russo Brothers, Avengers: Doomsday brings together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men to battle Doctor Doom in an epic, reality-bending conflict. The film features a huge cast of 27 Marvel stars, including Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Pedro Pascal, Simu Liu, David Harbour, Chris Hemsworth, and Patrick Stewart. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
Why Doctor Strange’s MCU Return is Either a Good or Bad Sign for the MCU

Benedict Cumberbatch recently hinted at his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, likely in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. While fans are excited, some worry his character’s experiences with Clea and the Dark Dimension might complicate things, as it’s unclear how those events have changed his understanding of the Multiverse.
With rumors suggesting Doctor Doom wants to stop the incursions, there’s a chance he and Doctor Strange could team up in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
This new alliance might be incredibly dangerous, as Doom could exploit a powerful figure like Doctor Strange to cause the heroes to fail.
Doctor Strange’s return is crucial for understanding where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headed with its multiverse storylines. He’s consistently been a central figure in these complex tales, and his role could be to warn the heroes about the dangers ahead – specifically, that conflicts across the multiverse could lead to the destruction of everything.
