People who enjoy anime and superhero films are excited about the possibility of Daniel Deston Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi, leading a live-action Naruto movie, though this development could create challenges for the film’s production and release.

Tasha Huo, the screenwriter for the upcoming live-action Naruto movie, recently explained the project’s current standstill is due to director Destin Daniel Cretton’s commitments to Marvel projects. She stated she has no new information to share about the film’s progress and wishes she did. While she didn’t say specifically which Marvel project is keeping Cretton busy, it’s widely believed to be Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Cretton is also a co-creator of Wonder Man, and there are rumors of a Shang-Chi sequel in development.

Hollywood has often adapted anime into live-action films, and a live-action version of Naruto has been in development since 2015. Lionsgate will distribute the movie, and in February 2024, it was announced that Cretton would direct. Updates have been scarce since then, leaving fans eager for news, with some hoping for a release as early as August 2024. According to producer Huo, the goal was to make the live-action version feel realistic and grounded. She told Nexus Point News that while the original anime and manga are fantastic, they’re also quite over-the-top, and that was something they wanted to address in the adaptation.

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, has expressed strong support for Destin Daniel Cretton as the director for the live-action adaptation. Kishimoto said he was impressed with Destin’s work after seeing one of his action movies, and felt he would be a great fit for Naruto. After watching more of Destin’s films, Kishimoto realized his strength in crafting compelling human stories and became certain he was the only director who could truly bring Naruto to life.

What Can Marvel Fans Expect From Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

While news about a new Naruto project is quiet, development on Spider-Man: Brand New Day is moving forward quickly. The fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland is expected to pick up right after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and will continue to connect with the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland will be joined by Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon. Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as the Punisher, and Sadie Sink will be appearing in an as-yet-unspecified role. Liza Colón-Zayas, known for The Bear, is also joining the cast, though her part hasn’t been confirmed.

While Marvel Studios hasn’t released details about the plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, many believe the movie will be based on the 2008 comic book series of the same name. That storyline began after a major event where Spider-Man’s marriage to Mary Jane Watson was erased from history, and everyone—even those who previously knew his secret—forgot he was ever Spider-Man. Given how Spider-Man: No Way Home ended, this comic book storyline fits well with the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it will likely have some changes to fit the larger universe.

The new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, will be in theaters on July 31, 2026. A release date for the live-action Naruto movie hasn’t been announced yet.
