It’s been more than two years since the third season of The Mandalorian finished, and fans are eager to find out what’s happening with season four. The Mandalorian is widely considered one of the best and most popular Star Wars shows ever created. It’s been a crucial part of the franchise, particularly after the mixed reception to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the character Din Djarin has become a central figure for Star Wars fans.
It seemed like a sure thing that The Mandalorian would be renewed, but season 4 hasn’t been announced yet. There are a few reasons for this – season 3 wasn’t as well-received as previous seasons, and Pedro Pascal’s rising fame might make it difficult for him to continue in his role. However, the situation is more complicated than that, so let’s take a closer look at why season 4 is still in limbo.
Why The Mandalorian Season 4 Hasn’t Happened
Many fans are wondering why season 4 of The Mandalorian hasn’t been released yet. The main reason is the Hollywood strikes of 2023 by the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild. These strikes caused significant delays in production, and during that time, Lucasfilm and Disney decided to focus on making a movie instead of a new season of the show.
The upcoming movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2026. It will continue the story of Din and Grogu, following the events of season 3 of The Mandalorian. Disney and Lucasfilm likely want to assess the movie’s success with both critics and viewers before planning the future of the series.
As a big fan of The Mandalorian, I think the issues with season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett probably played a part in why season 4 is taking so long. Season 3 just didn’t feel as strong as the first two, and a lot of us were disappointed by things like Din and Grogu getting back together on another show, Din going back to the Children of the Watch, and Bo-Katan taking over so much of Din’s story. It feels like Lucasfilm and Disney might have hit pause on season 4 to address the fan reaction and rethink things.
The Mandalorian Season 4 Script Is Written
Okay, so here’s something really interesting that adds another layer to what’s happening with The Mandalorian. Despite the upcoming movie, Jon Favreau actually finished writing Season 4 before Season 3 even came out! He revealed this in an interview a while back, explaining that he likes to have the entire story arc mapped out. Knowing where things are headed with Din Djarin and Grogu allows him to build not just The Mandalorian, but other Star Wars series, all toward a larger, cohesive narrative. It’s a fascinating bit of foresight, and honestly, makes me even more excited – and curious – about where everything is going.
I’ve already written a full outline for season four of The Mandalorian. It’s important to have a clear plan for the entire story. Dave Filoni and I worked it out together, and I was actually writing it while we were finishing up season three. We want everything to feel connected and like one continuous narrative. Dave is now focused on Ahsoka, which I’m helping produce, but he’s leading the writing and creative direction. Because all these shows – including Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew – happen in the same Star Wars timeline, we have to consider everything that’s been established and build on the storylines from previous seasons of The Mandalorian.
The interview with Favreau happened nearly a year before The Mandalorian & Grogu movie was revealed, so it’s uncertain how the film will affect the script for season 4 of The Mandalorian. It seems likely that some storylines and concepts originally planned for season 4 will now be included in the movie, potentially requiring changes to the show’s writing.
Honestly, it’s still a bit confusing! Jon Favreau recently mentioned to Empire Magazine that he actually had a full script for The Mandalorian season 4 ready to go. But he also explained that the script for the upcoming movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, isn’t like a normal TV episode script. What I take that to mean is the movie could be a much bigger story, and they might still be able to use the ideas from that season 4 script. Right now, though, it’s hard to say for sure what’s happening with it all.
Is The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie Replacing Season 4?
Everyone’s wondering about season 4 of The Mandalorian. While many assume The Mandalorian & Grogu will simply take its place, that’s not necessarily true. It seems more likely that The Mandalorian & Grogu is a way to try out new ideas for the future of the Star Wars franchise.
Depending on how well The Mandalorian & Grogu performs, Lucasfilm has a few options for the future. If the movie is a success, they might make more films instead of continuing the show with new seasons. It could also revitalize interest in The Mandalorian after its somewhat disappointing third season, leading to a fourth season renewal. However, if the movie doesn’t do well, Lucasfilm might put the series on hold and concentrate on other Star Wars projects.
The truth is, it’s currently unclear whether The Mandalorian and Grogu will happen instead of The Mandalorian season 4. Disney and Lucasfilm aren’t sharing any details, and we just don’t have enough information to know for sure. We probably won’t find out what happens with season 4 until at least June 2026, after the movie comes out.
Star Wars Is Prioritizing The Big Screen Again
The delay of The Mandalorian season 4 is largely due to Disney and Lucasfilm focusing their efforts on upcoming Star Wars films instead of new or returning TV series. They currently have at least seven Star Wars movies in the works, including a film featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu, Star Wars: Starfighter, a movie about Rey Skywalker and the New Jedi Order, and several other potential projects.
Currently, there aren’t many new Star Wars TV shows planned for release. We know that season 2 of Ahsoka is expected in late 2026, along with a new animated series called Maul: Shadow Lord and another season of Young Jedi Adventures. There’s also a possibility of a new installment in the Tales of… animated series and a fourth season of Star Wars: Visions being developed.
| Upcoming Star Wars Movies | |
|---|---|
| Title | Release Date |
| The Mandalorian and Grogu | May 22, 2026 |
| Star Wars: Starfighter | May 28, 2027 |
| New Jedi Order | TBD |
| Dawn of the Jedi | TBD |
| Simon Kinberg Trilogy | TBD |
Lucasfilm is scaling back its plans for future Star Wars shows, especially live-action series, as the company shifts its focus back to theatrical films. The reduced number of announced projects suggests Lucasfilm is no longer confident that Star Wars TV shows can be profitable, given their expensive production costs and relatively slow return on investment.
As a big fan, I’ve been hearing that Lucasfilm shifting its priorities might be why we’re waiting on The Mandalorian season 4. Din and Grogu are still two of the most beloved Star Wars characters Disney has, and it makes sense to me that they’d want to use that popularity to help make the upcoming movie a huge success. It’s smart to bring them back to the big screen after so long, and delaying the show could really boost the film’s profits.
Will The Mandalorian Season 4 Ever Happen?

This brings us to the big question: will there be a fourth season of The Mandalorian? The answer is still unclear. Several things could prevent it from happening. If the The Mandalorian & Grogu movie does well, Lucasfilm might focus on making more films instead. Conversely, if the movie isn’t successful, Lucasfilm could cancel The Mandalorian completely.
The show could return under a few circumstances. If fans really respond to The Mandalorian & Grogu, Lucasfilm might decide to make another season. They could also create a fourth season of The Mandalorian to build towards a future movie. Another possibility is that Disney might order more episodes to attract and keep subscribers on their streaming platform.
While it’s just a prediction, I believe we’ll eventually see a fourth season of The Mandalorian. The show is well-suited to a format with self-contained adventures, it’s already very popular, and Disney is unlikely to abandon its most successful Star Wars series on streaming. Even if Lucasfilm prioritizes films, The Mandalorian has enough momentum to continue even after the story of The Mandalorian and Grogu concludes.
One thing’s for sure about The Mandalorian: we haven’t seen the last of Din and Grogu. A new movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is already planned, and it will continue their story beyond where season 3 left off. Even if The Mandalorian doesn’t get another season, we’ll still get more adventures with these characters in this new film.
