HBO Exec Confirms ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4 Heads to France

Each season of HBO’s The White Lotus sparks a lot of speculation about what will happen, and even before the show airs, fans start guessing where the story will take place. Since Season 3 finished and Season 4 was announced, many believed France would be the next location – and HBO’s CEO, Casey Bloys, has now confirmed that’s true. However, Bloys shared very little else, explaining that the show’s creator, Mike White, is only just beginning to write the scripts.

Bloys confirmed the news at an HBO press event, per The Hollywood Reporter, where he noted:

“It’s going to be in France … Mike [White] is writing and just starting.”

The first season of the show premiered in 2021 and was set at a luxurious resort in Hawaii. Season 2 moved the action to Sicily in 2022, and the latest season, Season 3, is taking place in Thailand. The wait between Seasons 2 and 3 was longer than usual because of the writers’ and actors’ strikes last year. If the scripts for Season 4 aren’t finished soon, it’s unlikely we’ll see a new season before 2027.

What Else Do We Know About ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4?

HBO

Each new season of The White Lotus begins by hinting at a death, then flashes back to show the guests arriving at the resort. From there, surprising things happen, building to the reveal of who died and how. In season one, Shane accidentally stabbed Armond after Armond broke into his room. Season two’s main death was Tanya, who killed several men she believed were after her, but ultimately drowned. Season three ended with Rick and Chelsea being killed in a gunfight after Rick murdered Jim.

Because The White Lotus features a new story and characters each season, the cast changes completely. Right now, there’s no news about who might be in Season 4, as the writing is still in the early stages. So far, Jon Gries is the only actor who’s been in all three seasons. Jennifer Coolidge was in Seasons 1 and 2, and Natasha Rothwell’s character appeared in Seasons 1 and 3. In the Season 3 finale, Greg (Jon Gries) paid Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) to keep quiet about his involvement in Tanya’s death and his reasons for being in Thailand. With both characters seemingly content with the arrangement, it’s unlikely either will return for another season.

It’s unclear if the show’s writers plan to revisit old plot threads from earlier seasons, potentially bringing back familiar actors.
