Brendan Fraser is coming back for a fourth film, giving him the opportunity to address a mistake from almost twenty years ago. The news, which fans have been hoping for years, was recently announced. Fraser confirmed to the Associated Press that this is the sequel he’d been wanting to make since 2008.
Brendan Fraser explains that the movie he’d hoped to make never happened. The third Mummy film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), moved the story away from Egypt and to China, focusing on the Terracotta Army. Fraser believes this change was simply a way for the studio to promote other projects.
NBC held the broadcasting rights for the Olympics that year, so we combined that with another project and headed to China. Working in Shanghai was an amazing experience. I’m particularly proud of the third film because it works well as a separate story. We assembled a new team and did our best work on it.
Although Tomb of the Dragon Emperor wasn’t the ending Brendan Fraser envisioned for The Mummy trilogy, The Mummy 4 offers him a chance to conclude Rick and Evelyn O’Connell’s story as he’d always hoped, and with the original co-star (Maria Bello had taken over the role in the third film).

Although Brendan Fraser still has fond memories of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the movie wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences. It has a very low 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and only a 30% audience score. While The Mummy films haven’t generally been critically acclaimed – the original film received the highest approval rating in the series at 63% – Fraser would be justified in wanting to revisit Tomb of the Dragon Emperor even if the setting hadn’t been altered.
Rob Cohen took over directing duties for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, replacing Stephen Sommers, who had directed the first two Mummy films. Sommers still served as a producer on the third installment. Brendan Fraser returned as the adventurous Rick O’Connell, but Rachel Weisz was replaced by Maria Bello as his wife, Evelyn. Weisz chose not to return due to concerns about the script and because she had recently had a baby. John Hannah did reprise his role as Evelyn’s brother, Jonathan Carnahan.
The movie brought back beloved characters and introduced Jet Li as a revived Chinese warlord mummy. Luke Ford played the role of Alex, the now-grown son of Rick and Evelyn, and the cast also included Anthony Wong and Michelle Yeoh.
Although the first Mummy film was enjoyed by many despite being critically mixed, likely due to the appealing performances of its actors, The Mummy Returns received criticism for prioritizing action over character. By the time Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was released, many felt the series had become overly reliant on special effects. If a fourth Mummy film can bring a satisfying and emotional conclusion to Rick and Evelyn’s story, both Brendan Fraser and dedicated fans would likely welcome it.
