‘Clearly Not The Same As Being Sucked Off.’ I Asked Ghosts’ Richie Moriarty What Happens To Pete If He’s Away From The Property For Too Long

Be warned: this contains spoilers for the Ghosts episode “Planes, Shanes and Automobiles” from Season 4. If you haven’t watched it yet, proceed with caution! The episode airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on CBS.

I’ve always wondered about Pete’s unique ability on Ghosts. He’s arguably the most powerful ghost because he can venture off the property, but there’s a catch – if he stays away too long, he starts to fade away. This led me to consider what would happen if Pete disappeared completely. I recently asked Richie Moriarty, the actor who plays Pete, and he shared his thoughts on the matter.

In the season finale of Ghosts (available on Paramount+), Pete discovered that leaving the property for extended periods causes him to fade away. He hasn’t tested how far he can go before completely disappearing, which is probably a good thing. But where would Pete even go if he did vanish entirely? Richie Moriarty, who plays Pete, has also pondered this, and recently shared his thoughts on his character’s limitations with TopMob.

I’m really not sure what happens to him. I think he ends up in a sort of limbo – just drifting in nothingness, stuck there permanently. It’s definitely not like he’s moving on to a better place; he doesn’t seem to be going anywhere at all.

Okay, let’s be real, this isn’t like a typical ghost ascension – you know, the kind where they finally move on. When a ghost really transcends, it’s usually because of some huge act of selflessness or a major life epiphany. Pete just kinda…overdid it with his powers. That’s definitely not the trigger. So whatever’s happening now has to be something completely different, something we haven’t seen before.

Richie Moriarty shared with me his belief that if Pete vanished completely, he might end up lost in a sort of limbo – a place like Purgatory, he said. He went on to explain:

I think he’s likely feeling lost and vulnerable, which is a really scary situation, and it’s interesting to explore that fear as an actor. We see a glimpse of that in the ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ episode, where he’s stranded far from home, and that theme is revisited a bit here.

The actor discussed this week’s episode of Ghosts, titled “Planes, Shanes and Automobiles.” The episode follows Pete and Sam on a road trip to New York that goes hilariously wrong. They encounter travel issues and a series of unfortunate events, ultimately leaving them stranded with a broken-down car in Dunbridge, Ohio. They’re gone long enough that Pete begins to fade from existence, but thankfully they make it back to Woodstone just in time, restoring all of his ghostly parts…for now.

When I spoke with the actor who plays Pete, Moriarty explained he believes the ghost would go to a place similar to Purgatory if he didn’t reach the manor in time. I suggested it could be more like nothingness, and he thought that was possible too. Ultimately, though, he admitted he’s not sure where his character would actually go if he disappeared completely.

He believes the idea will likely be revisited in the future. The actor mentioned that the show’s creators have previously considered how Pete’s abilities would play out, and added:

I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens eventually. I think the people in charge of the show have definitely considered it and what it would involve, so I’m hopeful we’ll get to explore that possibility at some point.

Paramount+ is the streaming service where you can watch popular CBS shows like Ghosts. It costs as little as $7.99 a month, or $59.99 for a year. There’s also a premium option available for $12.99 a month. See the deal here.

Good news! Since Ghosts has been renewed for a sixth season, there’s still time to delve into this storyline. Plus, the show benefits from having unanswered questions – it keeps both viewers and the cast guessing and having fun with theories.

You can keep up with the funny adventures of Pete and the ghosts each Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time when Ghosts airs on CBS.
