Although the new Hunger Games movie, Sunrise On The Reaping, won’t be in theaters until 2026, Lionsgate just released the first trailer. Fans are especially buzzing about Glenn Close’s appearance – did you catch a glimpse of her?
The trailer for Sunrise on the Reaping opens with a striking scene: 78-year-old Glenn Close, nominated for an Oscar, is wheeled onto the stage as Drusilla Sickle to select the participants for the 50th Hunger Games. Many viewers didn’t even recognize her, and the reactions are fantastic! Here’s one example of the buzz.
Glenn Close is famous for transforming herself for roles, but her portrayal of Drusilla Sickle is particularly striking. Drusilla is an escort during the Games, similar to Effie Trinket from the original Hunger Games films, but her appearance is truly over-the-top. The character is described in the book as an older woman with a heavily altered face and a very unique sense of style – even using thumbtacks to hold her face in place! The movie seems to be capturing that unusual physical description quite well.
I completely missed that Glenn Close was in the trailer when I first saw it, so I understand why fans are surprised and talking about it online. Here’s what others are saying:
- “just found out this is Glenn Close and feeling sick to my stomach” – @sydneyskeezer
- “I thought that was Glenn Close but then I kept watching and was like ‘nah, that ain’t her’ 😂😂” – @LegacyRolo
- “I refuse to believe this is Glenn Close.” – @jacksondavid402
- “she’s always up to some insane shit” – @anxiousdeluxe
Glenn Close is joining the cast of the new Hunger Games movie, and Billy Porter will play her husband, Magno Stift. Many viewers have also noticed a resemblance between the character Drisilla and Aunt Gladys from Weapons. See the comparison below:
The Hunger Games films have long used the extravagant costumes of the Capitol to critique unrealistic beauty expectations, and Glenn Close’s character continues this tradition, subtly highlighting the prevalence of plastic surgery. Her character, Drisilla, has overseen the Reaping ceremony for a quarter of a century and shares a history with Elle Fanning’s Effie Trinket that will be explored in the new movie.
The first trailer for the movie adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping is full of scenes from the book, and it’s amazing to see them realized on screen so early – a year before the film comes out on November 20, 2026. We’re especially excited to see Close and the rest of the cast bring the story to life, as this is one of the book adaptations we’re most looking forward to next year.
