Benedict Cumberbatch, known for playing Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, says he enjoys portraying villains more than heroes.
Benedict Cumberbatch first appeared as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016, and has since been in several other Marvel films, including Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He’s also provided the voice for the character in the What If…? series. While it hasn’t been officially announced, many fans believe he will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies.
Benedict Cumberbatch has a history of playing memorable villains, even beyond his work with Marvel. He famously portrayed Khan in the 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness, and also lent his voice to the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit films, among other roles.
What did the MCU’s Benedict Cumberbatch say about playing villains?
During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, Benedict Cumberbatch was asked whether he enjoys playing heroic or villainous characters more, and which role he finds easier to portray as an actor.
Benedict Cumberbatch shared that while playing a villain is generally more enjoyable, a hero with a complex journey – one filled with interesting challenges – can be just as rewarding. He explained that portraying a villain allows an actor to explore darker impulses in a thrilling way.
I’m really looking forward to Benedict Cumberbatch’s next project, a new British drama called The Thing with Feathers. He’s been busy with The Roses and The Phoenician Scheme, and this one looks promising. It’s written and directed by Dylan Southern, and thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long – it’s hitting US theaters later this month!
