House Of The Dragon Has Been Renewed For Season 4, But I Have A Game Of Thrones-Sized Question

As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I’m thrilled to hear we’ll be returning to Westeros for years to come! HBO just announced that House of the Dragon is already getting a fourth season, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming back for a second! It’s all incredibly exciting, but it does make me wonder what the plan is for House of the Dragon beyond Season 4 – it’s a big question mark, just like the mysteries in Game of Thrones used to be!

We’re Getting House Of The Dragon Season 4 Next Year

HBO has announced that Season 3 of House of the Dragon will premiere in the summer of 2026. They’ve also confirmed a fourth season, currently planned for release in 2028. This schedule continues the show’s trend of releasing new seasons every other year, following the premieres of Season 1 in 2022 and Season 2 in 2024.

Get ready to continue the epic tales on HBO Max! In addition to House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for another season, with the first episodes arriving on January 18, 2026.

Speaking about these shows’ futures, Francesca Orsi, the Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said:

We’re excited to announce new seasons of both ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ over the next three years for all the ‘Game of Thrones’ fans. These shows demonstrate the incredible depth and imagination of George R.R. Martin’s world. Fans can look forward to the inspiring story of Dunk and Egg in January, beautifully brought to life by George and Ira Parker. And this summer, ‘House of the Dragon’ will return with some truly spectacular battles.

I think everything is going to be fantastic, and I’m really happy we’re getting more of both shows. But the news about a final season of House of the Dragon made me wonder something.

Will Season 4 Be House Of The Dragon’s Final Season?

In August 2024, Variety reported that the HBO series House of the Dragon is planned to conclude after its fourth season. According to showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal, the creative team intends to tell the story over three and four seasons.

Interestingly, HBO’s announcement for Season 4 didn’t mention it being the last season. You’d think if it was the end, the network would promote it as a grand finale. But the announcement just said it was “a fourth season,” so it doesn’t seem like they’re planning to end the show with this installment.

This makes me curious about the future of House of the Dragon. Will the show conclude after four seasons, or could the Targaryen family’s story continue for a fifth season or even longer?

The previous show, Game of Thrones, lasted eight seasons, but many viewers felt it went on too long and that the ending wasn’t satisfying. I hope the same doesn’t happen with House of the Dragon. Ideally, I’d like to see it end after four seasons, though I’m willing to consider more. HBO hasn’t made any firm decisions about the show’s future, and it seems they’re keeping their options open.

We’re now waiting for Season 3 of House of the Dragon, which is coming next year. Season 4 will follow two years after that. Beyond that, the future of the show is a bit unclear, but we’ll share any updates as soon as we have them.
