Season 3 of The Gilded Age presented significant challenges for George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon), straining their marriage to the breaking point. The season finale strongly suggests their relationship may be over.
The third season concluded with George questioning his marriage to Bertha after a frightening health scare. He realized he’d lost trust in her, largely because of how she treated their daughter, Gladys (played by Taissa Farmiga), and told her things needed to drastically improve or he’d leave. He then returned to New York, leaving Bertha devastated. As if that weren’t enough, Gladys also shared with her mother that she was expecting a baby.
Although the season finale didn’t confirm a divorce, the couple’s future looks bleak. The cast of The Gilded Age is just as eager to find out what happens next, as they haven’t received the scripts for season four yet.
Things are about to pick up for the show’s next season! Several cast members have confirmed they’ll be receiving the first three scripts shortly. Cynthia Nixon, who plays Ada Forte, told TV Insider, “We’re expecting the first three scripts very soon, which is great news.”
Carrie Coon, who plays Bertha, shared her thoughts on her character’s marriage. Although the show is based on the real Vanderbilt family – and Alva and William Vanderbilt actually divorced in real life – Coon remains hopeful for George and Bertha’s future. “The show hasn’t directly followed the real Vanderbilt story yet, and Bertha is incredibly determined,” she said. “If she wants to win George back, she won’t give up until she does.”
As of right now, there’s no confirmed date for when season 4 of The Gilded Age will be released.
