I just finished watching Inside, and wow, it really stuck with me. It’s not your typical action-packed thriller at all. It’s more of a slow burn, a really unsettling descent into loneliness. The movie isn’t about escaping the apartment, it’s about watching the character’s mind fall apart while he’s trapped. Willem Dafoe is incredible as Nemo, an art thief whose plan goes wrong and leaves him stuck in this super modern, empty penthouse. At first it seems nice, but it quickly feels cold and isolating. As the days turn into weeks, and then… well, it feels like time loses all meaning, the apartment starts to feel like a trap, and you can really feel his desperation as things break down and his sanity starts to slip.
Willem Dafoe delivers a captivating performance, portraying a vulnerable and unpolished character. Isolated and with nowhere to turn, Nemo retreats into himself, expressing his inner turmoil through art, desperate searching, and vivid hallucinations. His luxurious apartment transforms into both a creative outlet and a confining space, a place where he confronts his demons. The film takes its time, patiently observing Nemo’s cycles of breakdown and fragile recovery, emphasizing his internal struggle and sense of abandonment.
The ending of Inside is intentionally unclear and leaves you with more questions than answers – it’s also quite sad. The creator, Katsoupis, doesn’t tie everything up neatly; instead, he makes you think about what it truly means to survive when there’s no audience. Ultimately, the game is a study of perseverance, pride, and the haunting beauty of falling apart. It challenges us to consider how much of our identity we’ll sacrifice before acknowledging we’re stuck with no way out. This is an explanation of the game’s ending.
What Happens in ‘Inside’?

Focus Pictures
The movie Inside centers around Nemo, an art thief who attempts to steal a multi-million dollar self-portrait from a high-end New York penthouse. When an alarm is accidentally triggered during the heist, Nemo finds himself stuck inside. His partners abandon him, leaving him to fend for himself. Surprisingly, the police never arrive. Nemo is left with limited supplies and no clear way out. To make matters worse, the apartment’s thermostat malfunctions, swinging wildly between extreme heat and frigid cold, turning his confinement into a punishing experience.
Being stuck inside, I, Nemo, spent my time trying to break out. My big plan revolved around this light fixture way up high – I built this crazy tower of furniture and anything I could find to reach it. To pass the time, I also watched the security cameras, and I actually started to feel connected to one of the employees, making up a whole backstory for her in my head. Being an art enthusiast, I kept myself busy with creative projects too. Honestly, it felt like forever, though I could tell how much time had passed by how full the bathtub and toilet got with… well, you get the idea.
As time passes, the man’s long isolation takes a toll on him, causing him to experience hallucinations, often involving a sense of a greater power. One particularly vivid hallucination gives him the determination to escape, but he quickly realizes the seemingly crucial opening is impossible to break through. In a desperate attempt, he starts a fire with broken glass, hoping to trigger the building’s alarm system. However, only the sprinklers activate, and the penthouse begins to flood. The game ends with him climbing atop his makeshift furniture tower, followed by a shot of the sconce falling to the ground. The game deliberately leaves his fate uncertain; the player never sees him successfully escape through the sconce.
God and Technology in ‘Inside’

Focus Pictures
Before discussing how Inside ends, it’s helpful to understand the film’s two main ideas. The movie frequently hints at a greater power at work. It seems like some unseen force has put Nemo in this situation as a form of punishment for past mistakes. The tall tower he builds could represent a sinner trying to reach heaven, and his constant fiddling with the wall fixture is like trying to get through heaven’s gates. We feel this heavenly presence when Nemo looks into the air vents—the broken air conditioning has been blasting hot air, but then finally switches to cool air that blows on his face.
The story suggests a duality, with a force opposing God represented by the character Nemo. This is hinted at when Nemo sees a portrait that looks like himself – a portrait of the man who lives below him. Whether this powerful force is a traditional God, or simply the faulty mechanics that have imprisoned Nemo, is open to interpretation. Regardless of one’s beliefs, Katsoupis cleverly uses these references to enhance the narrative.
Ultimately, Nemo’s problems stem from a technological failure. The penthouse’s security is incredibly effective at preventing break-ins – it was virtually impossible for anyone to steal the artwork, let alone escape. However, while it keeps him contained, the system doesn’t notify the authorities or offer him any comfort. Despite its sophistication, it only serves to imprison him. It seems the system was intended to alert someone when something went wrong, but that feature isn’t working. In today’s world, we rely heavily on technology, and when it fails us, it feels devastating. In a way, technology has become like a higher power: when it works, life is good, but when it fails, it brings suffering.
‘Inside’ Ending, Explained

Focus Features
Considering the film’s central ideas, let’s look at the ending. Inside concludes with the wall light crashing down, but it doesn’t tell us if Nemo actually got away. While it seems likely he did – perhaps symbolically entering heaven and leaving the apartment – the movie deliberately avoids showing this. Maybe that wasn’t the goal. The ending is open to interpretation, but the film’s main themes remain powerfully present.
Where To Stream ‘Inside’
You can now watch Inside on Peacock. It’s also available to rent or buy on digital platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV. Whether you’re seeing it for the first time or rewatching, this film is best enjoyed with careful attention. The detailed visuals created by Katsoupis and Willem Dafoe’s powerful performance are particularly noteworthy.
