Netflix is creating an animated series for adults called ‘Grim,’ based on the comic books by Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano. Al Gough, Miles Millar, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson are executive producers. The show, as reported by Deadline, centers around Jessica Harrow, a new Reaper whose job is to guide souls to the afterlife. Jessica doesn’t remember how she died or anything about her past life, and this mystery leads her to uncover secrets about the afterlife itself.
The comic series is managed by Gough and Millar through their company, Millar/Gough Ink, alongside Aaron Schmidt and Yuh Nelson. Stephen Christy and Adam Yoelin are executive producers for Boom! Studios, with Mette Norkjaer, Phillips, and Flaviano serving as co-executive producers. Launched in 2022, ‘Grim’ quickly became one of Boom! Studios’ best-selling titles and will finish its 25-issue run this month. Boom! Studios, established in 2005, has successfully adapted several of its comics for television, including ‘Butterfly,’ which stars Daniel Dae Kim.
Gough and Millar are known for their work on the popular Netflix series Wednesday, which has become one of the platform’s biggest English-language hits. They’ve also contributed to shows like Smallville, Into the Badlands, and The Shannara Chronicles. On the big screen, they’ve worked on films including Spider-Man 2, the Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights movies, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and the recent Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Jennifer Yuh Nelson not only directs this project but also executive produces it. She’s a seasoned animation professional with credits including episodes of Love, Death + Robots and a leadership role as Head of Story on the first Kung Fu Panda film. She went on to direct Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3, making her the first woman to direct a major animated feature by herself, and she received an Academy Award nomination for her work on Kung Fu Panda 2.
