December Will Be a Sad Month for Supernatural Fans

When it first aired in 2005, nobody predicted the show would become so popular. The fantasy horror series ultimately became The CW’s longest-running show, concluding after 15 seasons in 2020.

The final episode of Supernatural aired on November 19, 2020, bringing Sam and Dean Winchester’s story to a close. While fans still talk about a potential revival, there haven’t been any official plans announced, even after five years. Now, it appears the show will be removed from Netflix on December 18, according to What’s on Netflix.

With the news that Supernatural is leaving Netflix, fans have a little time to re-watch all their favorite episodes. The series has a total of 221 hours of content, making a complete re-watch in just one month a pretty big commitment.

Netflix used to have a deal with The CW to show their programs. This agreement gave Netflix the exclusive right to stream those shows for about five years after the last episode aired. This applied to several series, and now, five years after the final episode of Supernatural aired, that streaming exclusivity has ended.

Besides Supernatural, two other shows, The 100, also ended in 2020 and will be removed from streaming on December 18th. While it’s unconfirmed where they’ll go, it’s probable Warner Bros. will move them to HBO Max, where they’re already available in many countries.

As a huge fan, I’ve been following all the buzz about a potential continuation of Supernatural. At the Creation Honolulu convention, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki hinted they’ve got some ideas about where the story could go next, which totally got everyone excited! But honestly, as much as I’m hoping for more, there’s been no official word confirming anything since then. We’re all still just waiting and seeing, I guess!

While promoting his show Walker in April 2024, Padalecki hinted that he and Jensen Ackles might discuss a potential project related to their characters from Supernatural in 2025. He explained that during the final seasons of Supernatural, they jokingly agreed that if there was still interest, they would reunite five years after the show ended – meaning 2025 – to see what their characters, Sam and Dean, were doing.

What’s Next for the Supernatural Stars?

Although a reunion hasn’t been ruled out, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have both moved on to new projects. After leaving The CW – particularly following the quick cancellation of Walker – they’ve both started working with CBS and Prime Video.

Jensen Ackles currently has a recurring guest role on a show. At the same time, Jared Padalecki is starring in Fire Country, a series that was hinted to potentially launch its own spinoff, and will continue his work with CBS on a future project.

I’ve been really following Jensen Ackles’ work with Prime Video, and he’s quickly become a familiar face there. His show Countdown was a fun action series over the summer, even though it was sadly canceled after only one season. Before that, he was great on The Boys, and now he’s getting his own prequel spinoff, Vought Rising. It’s exciting to think this could open doors for Jared Padalecki too, since he’s joining Jensen for Season 5 of whatever comes next, along with Misha Collins – it’s great to see the whole team potentially working together again.

Fans of the show Supernatural can continue exploring the story through a new officially licensed comic book. Written by Greg Pak, with art by Eder Messias, colors by Thyago Brandao, and lettering by Jeff Eckleberry, the comic takes place before the end of the first season.

Supernatural is available to stream on Netflix until Dec. 1.
