It turned out Alex was actually Billie’s mother! And in a truly heroic move, she jumped into a portal – taking the villain with her – all to protect her daughter. It was a fantastic, emotional ending!
The Russo family is determined to discover what happened to Alex, and the show’s finale heavily suggested she’s still alive. Despite this, many viewers initially believed the show had killed off its most popular character, leading to the phrase “Alex Russo dead” trending online. David Henrie is the only main cast member from the original Wizards of Waverly Place to return for the new series, though Selena Gomez will make occasional appearances. Both Henrie and Gomez are also producers on the revival. In an interview with Us Weekly, Henrie shared that the creative team was surprised by the reaction to a plot point: “I didn’t think anyone would believe Alex was dead,” he said. “Nobody working on the show expected people to assume that.”
Henrie was shocked by the reaction, saying, “No one expected that! Someone posted a false story online, and everyone just accepted it as truth.” She clarified, “We never intended for Alex Russo to die; she simply stepped through a portal to another world!” It’s common in fantasy stories for characters who seemingly meet open-ended fates to eventually be revealed as survivors.
The season finale clearly establishes what season 3 of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will focus on.
