Superman 2’s Villain Makes DC History, Breaking A 50-Year Superman Trend

The upcoming movie Superman 2 (also known as Man of Tomorrow) is set to do something new for villains in Superman films – something that hasn’t been done in the last 50 years. Even though DC Studios is planning many villains for its new DC Universe, the franchise already has a long history of memorable antagonists.

According to reports from The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez and Casey Loving, Brainiac will be the primary villain in the upcoming DC Studios film, Man of Tomorrow. This will be the first time Brainiac appears as a villain in a live-action DC movie, and represents a significant shift in the direction of standalone Superman films. As of now, the role of Brainiac has not been cast.

The upcoming film Man of Tomorrow will be the first Superman movie in nearly half a century to feature a villain who isn’t either General Zod or Lex Luthor, both popular characters from the comics. The last time a Superman film did this was in 1983 with Superman III, which instead used a completely original villain, Ross Webster, played by Robert Vaughn.

Michael Shannon played the villain General Zod in recent Superman movies, continuing a role first made famous by Terence Stamp in the 1980 film Superman II. Gene Hackman was the original Lex Luthor, appearing in Superman (1978) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). Later, Kevin Spacey played Lex Luthor in the 2006 film Superman Returns.

Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor in the new DC Universe (DCU), which is being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. He’ll first appear as the character in the 2025 Superman movie, then reprise the role in Season 2 of Peacemaker. He’s currently set to appear as Lex Luthor for a third time in Superman 2.

Following the 2025 film Superman, Man of Tomorrow will continue the story with David Corenswet as Superman. The new movie will star Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Frank Grillo, and will see Superman and Lex Luthor joining forces to stop the villain Brainiac, who poses a threat to everything they care about. Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Brainiac’s Expected Impact on Superman 2

As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about Brainiac being introduced. He’s seriously a top-tier threat – think Justice League level! In the comics, he doesn’t just conquer planets, he collects entire civilizations like trophies. Honestly, he’s the most dangerous villain David Corenswet’s Superman has gone up against so far, and I really hope we see a lot more of him beyond just this first appearance. He’s a villain that deserves a long run!

Brainiac is famous for his relentless pursuit of knowledge, and he’ll likely target Earth and its inhabitants – including many with superpowers. Following the events of the Superman movie, Brainiac poses such a significant danger that Lex Luthor, who despises superpowered individuals, might be forced to join forces with Superman, his greatest enemy, to protect the world.

Superman will come to understand he can’t defeat Brainiac by himself. This is a new challenge for him, especially after successfully battling so many strong enemies in his first independent mission.
