The Star Wars films are among the most popular movie series ever, enjoyed by fans for decades in theaters and now on Disney+. It’s been a while since the last film, The Rise of Skywalker, came out, but several new Star Wars movies are in development. One of the most anticipated is a film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, and fans are hoping to see other actors from the recent trilogy return as well. John Boyega, who played Finn, recently shared the three things that would need to happen for him to reprise his role.
Lucasfilm is planning more Star Wars content, including a new set of three movies and separate films like Starfighter. While details are unclear about a potential film centered on Rey, many fans would love to see John Boyega reprise his role as Finn, and even become a Jedi. Boyega recently discussed at Liverpool Comic Con (according to Collider) what it would take for him to return as the former Stormtrooper turned Rebel hero, explaining that…
Oscar and I are both pretty set in our ways, and we think this friendship is best suited for a movie – it needs a strong story, of course. I’ve already talked to Joonas about joining us on this project, and I’m hoping he’ll agree. If we can get the right team together, who knows what we can achieve?
I completely agree with all three of these requests. As a fan who hoped to see a romance between Poe and Finn starting with The Force Awakens, I’d be thrilled if their story continued in future movies. It would be even better if Chewbacca was included, and of course, with a strong script and compelling plot. Lucasfilm, are you paying attention?
When John Boyega first saw Finn use a lightsaber in The Force Awakens, he imagined Finn would train as a Jedi and fight alongside Rey. While Finn never received formal training, The Rise of Skywalker revealed he still possessed a connection to the Force. If Boyega reprises his role, there’s hope that this storyline could finally be explored.

Disney+ offers access to the entire Star Wars saga, featuring John Boyega as Finn. You can start streaming with ads for as little as $11.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for an annual subscription. See the deal here.
John Boyega experienced racism for his role, and many felt Finn’s storyline wasn’t fully developed. If the studio meets his requests, he might be willing to return to the character, but they need to officially cast him first.

While John Boyega isn’t keen on returning to Star Wars for TV series, he’s open to reprising his role as Finn in a future movie. I’m hoping he’ll be in the upcoming Rey movie, and that his character will finally get the chance to train as a Jedi. Let’s hope it happens!
John Boyega’s work in the Star Wars films is now available on Disney+, and it will also be shown in theaters again alongside The Mandalorian and Grogu, debuting on May 22nd as part of a planned movie release in 2026.
