The beloved musical comedy is being reimagined as a graphic novel, bringing the classic story to a new audience.
Okay, so I just heard some awesome news! The Blues Brothers are coming back in a big way – we’re talking TV, movies, concerts, new music, the whole nine yards. And it’s starting now with a brand new graphic novel called The Blues Brothers: The Escape of Joliet Jake. It’s written by Stella Aykroyd, Luke Pisano, and James Werner, with amazing art by Felipe Sobriero. I already checked, and you can grab a copy on Amazon today, November 18th! I’m super excited to see what this means for the future of the Blues Brothers!
The new book, The Blues Brothers: The Escape of Joliet Jake, is a tribute to everything fans love about The Blues Brothers – from the original comedy sketches to the famous movie and music. It’s designed to be fun for both longtime followers and newcomers. The project was started by Judy Belushi Pisano, who sadly passed away before the book was finished. Along with the book, fans can also buy a vinyl record featuring previously unreleased music.
The press release describes this recording as a unique opportunity to hear Joliet Jake and Elwood Blues at their peak. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd deliver a 13-song performance backed by legendary musicians.
What Has The Creative Team Said About The Blues Brothers: The Escape Of Joliet Jake?
What began as a simple act has become a major part of pop culture. According to author Judy Belushi Pisano, “The Blues Brothers weren’t just a comedy sketch or a movie; they were genuine musicians who deeply admired the greats before them.” This book is a continuation of that passion project, and is dedicated to her mother, Judy Belushi Pisano – John Belushi’s widow and the devoted guardian of the Blues Brothers’ legacy for over four decades. After John’s death, she didn’t just keep his memory alive, she built upon it. Working with Z2 and talents Stella and James, she’s finally been able to realize her vision. She is honored to carry on her mother’s work, expanding the joyful, musical, and playfully rebellious world of the Blues Brothers.
Dan Aykroyd has a deep personal connection to the Blues Brothers characters, Elwood and Jake – he’s even said one of them reminds him of his own father. He’s assisted his father in preparing for Blues Brothers performances, walked with him among fans dressed as the iconic duo worldwide, and learned a few driving ‘techniques’ along the way. Now, with the support of Judy Belushi Pisano, Aykroyd, along with James and Luke, is excited to explore new creative avenues for Jake and Elwood through Z2 Comics and the world of graphic novels.
She explained that the playful and over-the-top moments from The Blues Brothers – like flying cars and even supernatural nuns – have always been a key part of their appeal. Now, Felipe Sobreiro’s illustrations are bringing those iconic scenes back to life. The development of this new story was heavily influenced by the real lives and experiences of Judy, John, and Dan Belushi, and the origins of the Blues Brothers themselves. They’ve woven those details into both subtle references and major plot points. She expressed her excitement about sharing this expanded story with fans of the music and the original film’s rebellious spirit.
The Blues Brothers: The Escape of Joliet Jake is on sale now.
