Franchises often fail when they become predictable. While great movies can build exciting worlds and memorable characters, audiences quickly lose interest if the stories and relationships stay the same. Even a successful series like Avatar needs to keep things fresh, which is why director James Cameron is shaking up the relationship between Jake Sully and Col. Miles Quaritch in the next Avatar film, Avatar: Fire And Ash.
Jake and Quaritch have been enemies since Jake sided with the Na’vi to protect Pandora in the first Avatar movie, and they had a major fight towards the end of Avatar: The Way of Water. However, their conflict will evolve in the upcoming second sequel, which is set to be released in theaters soon. Director James Cameron recently told Empire magazine about how their rivalry will change.
Simply having two characters repeatedly try to kill each other across three films becomes repetitive, so the story takes a more complex turn. The third movie really focuses on what motivates Quaritch and explores his inner conflict.
According to the director, a key element driving the story of Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) is his relationship with his son, Miles “Spider” Socorro (Jack Champion), who is sixteen and part of the Sully family. Quaritch, a tough military man, will be struggling with questions about his identity – how his past as a human and his current existence as a Na’vi Recombinant affect who he is and what he represents, especially now that he’s discovered he biologically fathered a child.
According to director James Cameron, Jake Sully isn’t focused on continuing his fight with Quaritch. Instead, he hopes they can eventually become allies and that Quaritch will learn to appreciate the natural world of Pandora. Cameron also stated,
Jake wants this person to get involved and contribute. I’m not going to reveal the specifics of how, but we’ll see how things unfold, because Jake prefers to have them as an ally.
James Cameron often features characters who start as villains but ultimately become heroes, like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character in the Terminator films. He went from a relentless killer to a protector of humanity in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. While the villainous Quaritch might not switch sides in Avatar: Fire And Ash, there are two more Avatar movies planned – Avatar 4, due in December 2029, and Avatar 5, slated for December 2031.
Starring Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Jack Champion, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Kate Winslet, Avatar: Fire And Ash is expected to be the year’s biggest film when it hits theaters on December 19th. With a runtime of nearly three and a quarter hours (195 minutes), it’s set to be an epic experience! Stay tuned to TopMob for more news and updates about the movie leading up to its release.
