The Western That Launched Kevin Costner’s Career Is Finally Streaming For Free

While Kevin Costner had appeared in a few films before, 1985’s Silverado was the movie that really launched his career. Interestingly, he’d previously filmed scenes for The Big Chill, but those scenes—showing his character as a deceased friend of the group—were ultimately cut from the final version.

As a Western fan, I always say Silverado is one of the best from the ’80s. The director, Lawrence Kasdan, really recognized Kevin Costner’s potential. When Kasdan had a new project, he immediately thought of Costner and offered him a part. Honestly, Costner just blew everyone away with his talent and charisma. If you haven’t seen it, or you’re in the mood for a re-watch, you’re in luck – it’s currently available to stream for free!

Costner Is Part Of A Fantastic Ensemble Cast

Silverado arrived when Westerns had become less popular in Hollywood. The genre’s peak had passed in the 1950s and 60s, and it wasn’t until the early 1990s, with films like Unforgiven, Tombstone, and even Kevin Costner’s own Dances With Wolves and Wyatt Earp, that Westerns made a comeback. Despite this, Silverado managed to gather a terrific cast, and that strong ensemble is a major reason the film remains memorable even though Westerns weren’t currently trendy.

Scott Glenn stars as Emmett, and Kevin Costner delivers a standout performance as his troubled brother, Jake. While traveling to free Jake from jail, Emmett meets Paden, portrayed by Kevin Kline. They’re joined by Cobb, played by Brian Dennehy, a friend of Paden’s, and later by Mal, played by Danny Glover, when they arrive in town.

Let me tell you, John Cleese is fantastic as the sheriff – it’s a surprisingly different role for him, stepping away from his usual Monty Python style. The movie also boasts a really strong supporting cast, including Rosannah Arquette, Jeff Goldblum, and the always-reliable Linda Hunt. But I have to give a special shout-out to Ray Baker, who absolutely nails the role of the other bad guy, McKendrick – he’s a truly gifted character actor.

Costner truly stands out even in a strong cast, and looking back, it’s obvious he was destined for stardom. From his very first scene – a playful, confident appearance behind bars – he embodies a classic movie star. He’s both funny and charismatic, and seems completely comfortable on screen, suggesting a bright future. Given his talent, it’s no surprise he’s made so many Westerns – he’s perfectly suited to the genre.

Silverado Is Available For Free!

You can now watch the movie for free on Tubi, though it does have ads. With fall setting in, it’s a great time to enjoy a Western, and since we don’t know when the next film in Kevin Costner’s Horizon series will be released, Silverado is a fantastic way to get your Costner Western fix.
