Be warned: the following contains spoilers for the eighth season, sixth episode of FBI, titled “Parental.” The episode is available to stream on Paramount+ the day after it airs on CBS.
Although CBS’s FBI has been loosely connected to Dick Wolf’s television universe since its second season, the current eighth season is doing well on its own, without needing weekly crossovers with the One Chicago and Law & Order shows on NBC. However, when a recent FBI episode mentioned “Hudson University” in New York City, it immediately reminded me of the fictional college with the same name that frequently appears on Law & Order: SVU.
Just to clarify, the Hudson University seen in FBI is different from the one in SVU, which is a relief for students in the FBI show’s version of New York City. While the university wasn’t as important to the plot of the recent “Parental” episode as it was in a Season 7 episode focusing on Jubal, here’s a summary of what happened.
What Happened At Hudson University In “Parental”
The team initially suspected Mimi Werrick of murder, but they quickly learned she was a student at Hudson University. Her phone records placed her on campus during the crimes, proving her innocence. It turned out Mimi was actually a victim – her baby had been stolen from her years ago, and she’d been falsely told the child had died. In reality, the baby was sold and raised by another family.
Mimi wasn’t the person Maggie and OA were trying to find, but she provided a helpful lead. It was amusing to see her connection to Hudson University actually provide a legitimate alibi – usually, things involving Hudson on Law & Order or SVU end badly. The events that happen on SVU‘s Hudson campus are almost always negative.
FBI’s Hudson Isn’t Law & Order’s Hudson
Maggie and OA didn’t cross paths with characters from Law & Order or SVU while investigating at Hudson University because, despite both shows sharing the same university name, they don’t actually use the same location. Both shows are produced by Wolf Entertainment, but maintain separate fictional universes.
It wasn’t surprising to learn that Juliana Aidén Martinez wouldn’t be returning as her SVU character. Showrunner Mike Weiss had already announced before Season 8 that she’d be joining FBI as a new character. However, the FBI series and the Law & Order universe have always been connected. In 2020, Tracy Spiridakos, who plays Detective Upton on Chicago P.D., appeared in both shows, creating a link between them all.
According to the original agreements from five years ago, there should only be a single Hudson University. But in practice, the universities operate independently, as show creator Mike Weiss confirmed to TopMob.
There is no crossover from NBC to CBS. There is a bright line between those two universes.
It’s probably a good thing there won’t be any crossovers between FBI and Law & Order beyond Juliana Aidén Martinez. Both Jeremy Sisto and Alana De La Garza previously played police officers on Law & Order before joining FBI as federal agents. As Season 8 progresses, there are no plans for these shows to connect.
Even though FBI will take a break for the winter and the 2026 TV season, there are still new episodes coming up! Watch CBS on Mondays at 9 p.m. Eastern for the latest from season eight, followed by Watson at 10 p.m. Eastern. If you miss an episode, or want to rewatch, you can stream them on Paramount+.
