Mike Flanagan Hopes to Reunite with Rebecca Ferguson After Doctor Sleep

Mike Flanagan, the creator of popular shows like The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Haunting of Bly Manor, is looking to work with Rebecca Ferguson again, six years after they collaborated on a project based on Stephen King’s work.

During a panel at Motor City Comic Con featuring Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel, ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeier and Grant Hermanns heard Flanagan discuss his previous work with John Ferguson on the 2019 film Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining. Ferguson then shared his thoughts, stating:

Rebecca has been working on the independent film Dune and is currently filming the third season of Silo, but she still manages to star in one of Netflix’s biggest hits. Despite her busy schedule, we stay in touch regularly – usually every couple of months she’ll reach out just to say hello. That’s when I ask if she’d be interested in taking on a role in one of my projects, and I love discussing ideas with her.

She’s very busy, but I’m confident we’ll be able to connect eventually. I can’t reveal who the character is, but she was one of the first people I called when I landed the role in The Exorcist.

In Doctor Sleep, Ewan McGregor plays Dan Torrance, who confronts his past trauma while trying to shield a young girl from a dangerous, immortal psychic named Rose the Hat, played by Ferguson. Rose and her group hunt children with special abilities, and Dan must stop them, revisiting the site of the terrifying events from The Shining.

Although Doctor Sleep received good reviews and was praised for its acting and direction—earning a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes—it didn’t do well in theaters, bringing in only $73 million worldwide. This disappointing result caused director Mike Flanagan to abandon plans for a prequel movie.

Rebecca Ferguson is continuing her role as Lady Jessica in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, with Dune: Part Three currently finishing production. She’s also filming the third season of the TV show Silo, which is slated for release next year and has received a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mike Flanagan is working on two new projects, one of which is a TV series based on Stephen King’s classic novel, Carrie. The story follows a shy high school student named Carrie who becomes the victim of a cruel prank, unaware that she possesses powerful telekinetic abilities. Starring Amber Midthunder, Matthew Lillard, and Samantha Sloyan, Flanagan’s adaptation of Carrie is scheduled to come out next year.

The filmmaker is currently developing a new Exorcist project, though details are still scarce. It’s uncertain exactly what the project will be, but given the filmmaker’s interest in working with a specific writer again, it’s possible they could collaborate on this film.
