Whenever I think of Jeremy Renner, a couple of his biggest roles immediately spring to mind – probably his years playing Hawkeye in the Marvel movies, or maybe his incredible performance in The Hurt Locker. He’s definitely known as a reliable action star, but I always feel like people miss some of his more subtle, complex work. And that really stands out in Wind River, a fantastic crime drama written and directed by the creator of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan. Honestly, I think it’s where he gives the best, most moving performance of his entire career. It just really resonated with me.

While some might see the movie simply as a chance for Hawkeye and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch to share the screen in a grittier story, it’s actually much deeper than that. The film allowed both actors to showcase a range of talent often overlooked by general viewers, and it’s a story told with real purpose. It’s frankly disappointing that this performance didn’t get the same awards attention as Jeremy Renner’s work in The Hurt Locker.

Wind River Is a Successful Taylor Sheridan and Jeremy Renner Collaboration

Taylor Sheridan’s first time directing results in a gripping crime thriller that also sheds light on a critical and often ignored issue. Set on the Wind River reservation in Wyoming, the film follows U.S. Wildlife Service Agent Cory Lambert as he investigates the death of a young woman from the Northern Arapaho tribe. He teams up with FBI Agent Jane Banner to solve the case. While the film is a compelling mystery, it’s ultimately a powerful drama about one man’s struggle with his past and a plea to address a serious problem facing Native American communities.

This role allowed the actor to demonstrate his versatility and range, moving beyond the action films he was famous for.

I truly believe this amazing performance wouldn’t have been possible without Taylor Sheridan’s incredible writing. He gave Jeremy Renner a role that really let him show a softer, more vulnerable side – something we hadn’t really seen from him before. Given everything Renner had done with the director previously, Sheridan was the perfect choice to unlock that part of his talent. And seeing them continue to work together on TV just proves how well they connect creatively. It’s fantastic!

Renner delivers a remarkably natural performance, unlike anything he’s done before. It’s a subtle and convincing portrayal, so immersive that you easily lose sight of the fact you’re watching an actor on screen.

Jeremy Renner’s Role in Wind River Was His Most Personal One to Date

Cory Lambert is an experienced tracker and hunter working as a wildlife agent on the Wind River reservation, where he protects livestock from predators. Though divorced from his wife, Wilma, Cory remains deeply connected to the land and its people, haunted by the death of his daughter, Emily – a tragedy that mirrors the circumstances surrounding Natalie’s disappearance. He’s a reserved but resilient man who must confront his painful past throughout the story.

His drive to bring the killers of these victims to justice is intensified by his own deep sadness and regret, making him a compelling, yet formidable, character. Like many actors, Renner drew on personal experience – as a father himself – to shape his portrayal of the role.

Becoming a father was still new to him, only about three years prior to filming, and it’s clear how the thought of losing his own daughter deeply informed his portrayal of the character’s sadness. Given the personal struggles Cory faces and everything he’s been through, this wasn’t a role many actors could handle. He didn’t play Cory as outwardly angry or reactive to the murders, but as someone struggling to contain his emotions. It’s a remarkably subtle and nuanced performance, showcasing his ability to bring depth to a character.

It’s become increasingly common for audiences to get so used to an actor playing a particular role that it’s hard to see them in anything else. This is particularly true for actors who’ve played iconic characters for many years. However, in films like Wind River, Jeremy Renner completely transformed, making it easy for viewers to forget he’s known as the superhero with a bow and arrow. While his chemistry with Elizabeth Olsen is just as strong as in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this film presents a very different, and highly believable, relationship.

Wind River Deserves More Attention

Wind River isn’t a typical, feel-good movie. It’s a serious and complex film that tackles the troubling issue of missing and murdered Native American women. While Jeremy Renner usually appears in different types of roles, he delivers a captivating performance here, and it’s a shame we don’t see him in such compelling projects more often.

He’s demonstrated his acting versatility in films ranging from serious biopics like Kill the Messenger to comedies like Tag. However, these types of movies don’t always attract large audiences. His involvement in blockbuster franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Mission: Impossible has given him the opportunity to pursue passion projects and roles he cares about – films that might not have gotten made without his star power.

Similarly, this film reminded viewers of Robert Downey Jr.’s range as an actor, after so many years of being known primarily as Iron Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wind River highlights the often-overlooked talent of Jeremy Renner.
