Anime films are currently experiencing a surge in popularity, largely driven by the success of R-rated movies like Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle. Both of these hits earned their mature ratings, and they demonstrate a growing appetite for anime that isn’t afraid to push boundaries. Many current anime series contain similar provocative material and would likely thrive as feature films.
Several recently popular anime series are just as deserving of mature, R-rated adaptations as Demon Slayer. This includes action-packed Shonen anime like Gachiakuta and Hell’s Paradise, as well as newer, more diverse series from different genres, such as Oshi no Ko and The Apothecary Diaries.
Gachiakuta is the Biggest Shonen Anime Hit on Crunchyroll This Year

Since its debut last summer, Gachiakuta has quickly become a fan favorite, and it’s easy to see why. It’s one of the most well-written and imaginative action-packed anime series in recent years. Studio Bones, known for their work on My Hero Academia, is delivering the same high-quality animation. Plus, it has a mature tone that fits right in with popular dark action anime like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen.
Gachiakuta follows Rudo’s quest for revenge against a harsh and unfair society that exiled him. He joins the Cleaners, fighting to survive the terrifying dangers of the Pit, the prison where he’s held. The series is known for its raw and realistic style, which effectively enhances both its humor and action. The fight scenes in Gachiakuta are particularly impressive, and its unique power system, the Vital Instrument, feels innovative. The characters supporting Rudo are also exceptionally well-developed, ranking among the best in the Shonen genre.
Dandadan Absolutely Needs an R-Rating For its Movies
From the very beginning, Dandadan has stood out for both its high quality and its willingness to show disturbing and difficult-to-watch content. It’s a wildly imaginative and energetic series that mixes genres, features memorable characters, and even boasts some of the best romantic storylines in Shonen manga. However, it also includes a concerning amount of scenes depicting non-consensual sexual situations.
I’ve been watching Dandadan, and what’s interesting is how it manages to appeal to a lot of people while still being pretty unique. It’s got everything – sci-fi, fantasy, action, and even romance – but it doesn’t shy away from mature content. The main characters, Momo and Okarun, are fantastic, and I can easily see a wide audience getting hooked on their complicated love story and the crazy, over-the-top battles they’re always involved in. Considering how popular Dandadan has become since it first came out, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they made a movie out of it – it feels inevitable, really.
The Apothecary Diaries Holds Nothing Back in its Depiction of Life as a Woman in Li
The anime The Apothecary Diaries has become incredibly popular, especially considering it doesn’t rely on action. It’s been confirmed that a movie is in the works, scheduled to be released between the two parts of its third season. Interestingly, the movie won’t be based on the original light novels by Hyūganatsu, but will instead tell a completely new story within the same world and with the same characters we’ve come to know and love.
Readers of the light novels know that later seasons of The Apothecary Diaries will take Maomao out of the imperial palace and put her romance with Jinshi on hold. Because their relationship is a major part of what fans enjoy, it would be smart for this new movie to focus on them and the obvious chemistry they share. However, the film should still address the series’ darker themes, which often depict the harsh realities faced by women in the historical, China-inspired setting of Li.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Could Decorate Movie Screens in Blood and Gore
After the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which many thought would only have one season, a second season and even a movie are now possibilities. Given the show’s intense violence, gore, and mature themes – hallmarks of both the anime and the original video game – any film adaptation would almost certainly be rated R. The series doesn’t shy away from graphic content, and its story deals with surprisingly complex and adult subjects.
The game will return to the well-known city of Night City and feature a completely new set of characters. While a potential Edgerunners movie could introduce a new cast or follow the characters from a possible Season 2, fans would likely be most thrilled if the movie explored events during the large time jumps in Season 1, allowing audiences to see more of David, Lucy, and Rebecca’s stories.
Hell’s Paradise Deserves the Same Film Treatment as Chainsaw Man & Jujutsu Kaisen
An R-rated anime movie for Hell’s Paradise is truly deserved. Fans have often compared it to hits like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen, calling the three shows the core of a new, darker style of action anime. With Season 2 on the way, excitement for Gabimaru’s story is at an all-time high.
It seems Hell’s Paradise will probably need a third season to cover all of Yuji Kaku’s original manga. However, after Season 2, there might not be much manga left, meaning the story could potentially finish with a movie instead. Because the story of Hell’s Paradise is so focused and well-paced, it would be best if the movie continued the main plot, rather than telling a completely new one.
86 Ranks Among the Bleakest and Most Realistic Mecha Anime
The anime 86 feels perfectly suited for a movie adaptation. Like great science fiction featuring giant robots, its strength lies in its well-developed characters and complex political themes, exploring the grim realities of war, the use of child soldiers, and the impact of systemic racism. Coupled with exciting action sequences and a refreshing lack of typical anime tropes, a film version of 86 would easily attract a wide, mainstream audience.
I’ve noticed that since 2023, 86 fans have been eagerly waiting for news about a second season. At this point, most people probably wouldn’t mind if a movie was announced instead, even if it meant a longer wait. It would be great if that movie came with a recap, similar to what Chainsaw Man did. Considering production timelines, even if a movie was announced today, we’re probably looking at a release no earlier than 2028.
Oshi no Ko Looks Cute, But is Absolutely Not For Kids
Often considered a masterpiece and one of the most unsettling films ever made, Perfect Blue is a brilliantly directed psychological horror that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, and explores the darker side of the entertainment industry. While recent idol anime like Zombie Land Saga have tackled similar themes with a dark edge, Oshi no Ko is the most worthy successor to Perfect Blue‘s cinematic legacy.
Oshi no Ko is a thrilling and mysterious anime that keeps audiences guessing. The third season is coming this winter, and it promises to be even more shocking than before. Since the manga doesn’t have much material left – enough for only one more season – many fans believe the story would be better concluded with a movie.
Sakamoto Days Can Pay the Ultimate Tribute to John Wick by Moving to Theaters
Despite being a popular series in Weekly Shōnen Jump for years, the Sakamoto Days anime didn’t receive a particularly enthusiastic reception, building a decent but not overly passionate fanbase. This is likely due to a slow beginning and the fact that the story relies heavily on action. The anime’s animation hasn’t quite lived up to the amazing fight scenes depicted in Yuto Suzuki’s manga. A movie could easily address these issues and significantly improve the anime’s overall standing.
I’m a huge fan of Sakamoto Days! It follows Taro Sakamoto, who used to be a legendary hitman but now runs a convenience store – seriously, it’s got a very similar vibe to John Wick. If they ever made a Sakamoto Days movie with the same kind of cinematic flair and action direction as the anime, and especially with Suzuki involved, the fight scenes could be just as incredible as anything in the John Wick films. Since Season 2 is already happening and the manga is still ongoing, I think the best move would be to finish the story with a series of movies, kind of like what Demon Slayer did. It would be epic!
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Still Deserves a Sequel

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury is easily the best entry in the Gundam franchise in the last two decades. Several factors contribute to its success, including its self-contained story, strong writing and animation, groundbreaking female protagonist, and unique school setting. It also features one of the most compelling lesbian romances ever depicted in anime. However, the series suffers from a very hurried conclusion. A movie continuing the story could resolve all remaining plot points and provide a more satisfying ending for fans.
The ending of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury gave Suletta and Miorine the happy ending they deserved, but the powerful, unethical corporations that caused so many problems throughout the series still control the world. A movie – or even a series of movies – could explore what happens next for Suletta, Miorine, and the other characters, and show them actively working to change the unfair system they oppose. While it might be challenging to bring Suletta and Eri back into mech combat, the filmmakers could find a way, or focus the action on a different character.
