‘That Always Annoys The Hell Out Of Me.’ Even George R.R. Martin Is Tired Of Spider-Man Reboots

Superhero movies have been incredibly popular for a long time, and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. Many iconic heroes, like Spider-Man, have been adapted for the screen multiple times. However, George R.R. Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, has expressed his frustration with the constant reboots of the Spider-Man franchise, which is currently available on Disney+.

Over the years, we’ve seen several different live-action Spider-Man movie series, plus animated films like Into the Spider-Verse. And that doesn’t even include all the times Spider-Man’s story has been restarted in the comics themselves. A writer recently expressed frustration with this pattern, particularly how often it happens within the comic books, telling PopVerse:

I get frustrated by that too, honestly. I really dislike it when stories are rewritten or completely restarted. You invest years, even decades, following a character, and then they just erase everything and begin again. It’s incredibly annoying.

It’s easy to see why people are frustrated – this has happened to Spider-Man fans before, both in the comics and the movies. Many were disappointed when The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was cancelled and Tom Holland took over the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But those two movie reboots are nothing compared to how often Spider-Man’s story has been retold in the comics.

The world of Game of Thrones is growing with new shows like House of the Dragon and the planned series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but there’s one consistent storyline without any reboots. Fans are still eagerly awaiting the final books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Disney+ offers access to Marvel Cinematic Universe and Spider-Man movies and shows. You can start streaming with ads for as little as $11.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here.

Later in the conversation, Martin mentioned a particular storyline from a Spider-Man comic that he disliked seeing erased when the series was rebooted. He explained it like this:

Peter Parker and Mary Jane got married. While you can’t take that back, people do sometimes manage to change things around these days. Still, what’s done is done, right?

Fans were thrilled to finally see Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson get married, but the Spider-Man story was later restarted, essentially erasing that event. Martin disagrees with this decision, believing it disregarded the established comic book history.

Despite years of anticipation, Mary Jane and Peter Parker haven’t shared a movie wedding yet, which might please George R.R. Martin, especially with all the recent movie remakes. Fans who’ve followed the Marvel films closely have already seen three different actors play Spider-Man, and seeing them all together in No Way Home was a satisfying moment.

The next Marvel movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is scheduled to release in theaters on July 31st, 2026. Hopefully, this won’t be another reboot, especially for Martin’s sake.
