The sequel to the live-action How to Train Your Dragon is scheduled for release in 2027, and Mason Thames recently shared details about when filming will begin, along with some exciting casting news. Following the success of the animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, Universal Pictures has created a live-action remake of the original film, similar to Disney’s approach.
Now plans are underway for a sequel, which is scheduled for June 11, 2027.
Thames recently told ScreenRant that he’ll be starting filming on How to Train Your Dragon 2 in the next couple of weeks, returning to the Isle of Berk. He shared that he’s very excited to reprise his role, as Hiccup is his most beloved character to play.
I’m starting rehearsals in a week or so, and I’m really looking forward to playing Hiccup again. He’s definitely one of my favorite characters to portray, so it’s going to be fantastic.
When asked who might play Hiccup’s mom – a character first seen in How to Train Your Dragon 2 – Dean Thames wasn’t sure if he could share any details. Instead, he simply said that whoever is cast in the role, or if they’ve already found someone, would be fantastic.
I’m optimistic about whatever decision they make, whether it involves finding someone new or if they’ve already done so. I think it will all work out well.
Thames questioning whether he can reveal who will play Hiccup’s mother suggests an actress has already been chosen for the role.
The 2014 animated film follows Hiccup and Astrid as they search for the villain Drago Bludvist. During their journey, they unexpectedly meet a dragon rider who is revealed to be Hiccup’s mother, Valka—who was presumed dead. It turns out Valka, voiced by Cate Blanchett, has been secretly dedicated to rescuing dragons all along.
Out of all the original voice actors from the animated movie, only Gerard Butler reprised his role in the live-action version, playing Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father.
Almost the entire cast was replaced for the 2025 movie, but the producers haven’t ruled out bringing back someone from the original film. This means Cate Blanchett might reprise her role, or they could choose a different well-known actress to take it on.
Dean DeBlois, the director of all the How to Train Your Dragon movies, revealed earlier this year that he’s contacted Cate Blanchett about returning as Valka, Hiccup’s mother and Stoick’s wife. He even showed her a preview of the upcoming live-action film.
He mentioned he was hopeful about the upcoming casting choice.
Cate Blanchett reprised her role as Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World, where her character finally returned home to the Isle of Berk after a long time away. Because of this, the actress who plays Valka in the upcoming live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 is expected to also appear in a potential third film.
Thames’ comments suggest fans will be thrilled with the actress chosen to play Valka. Many people are already hoping Cate Blanchett will reprise the role. With filming starting soon, we can expect an announcement about who’s been cast as Valka in the next few weeks, and it’s likely to generate a lot of buzz online.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be released in theaters on Friday, June 11, 2027.
