‘The Accountant’ Director Runs From Amazon to Apple for Mysterious New Movie

After the success of his action thriller, The Accountant 2, director Gavin O’Connor is starting a new project with a different studio. While the original Accountant film was released by Warner Bros. in 2016, the sequel was ultimately distributed by Amazon MGM after facing several years of delays. According to a report from Deadline, O’Connor is now in the early stages of developing Running for Apple Original Films. The film will be produced by Apple Studios, Makeready, and Nike. Apple representatives have not yet commented on the news.

Not much is known about the upcoming film, Running, but Deadline reports it’s the story of a talented runner striving for success, using their abilities to overcome a troubled past and build a better future. The screenplay is by Bill Dubuque, known for his work as an executive producer and story writer on Ozark. Dubuque and director Gavin O’Connor have worked together before – he wrote both The Accountant movies and is likely to write a third, which O’Connor has mentioned is in development.

Despite being nearly ten years after the original, The Accountant 2 proved to be a big win for Amazon MGM. After a successful premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest film festival—where it won the Headliner Audience Award—the Ben Affleck sequel quickly attracted viewers in both cinemas and through streaming. In its first 28 days on Prime Video, it reached an impressive 80 million viewers worldwide and even topped Nielsen’s Movie chart during its first week of streaming.

Gavin O’Connor is No Stranger to Sports Films

Gavin O’Connor often tells stories about sports, so his new film, Running, will likely explore the world of running. Nike is one of the producers, which suggests a focus on the sport itself. O’Connor’s 2020 film, The Way Back, starred Ben Affleck as a high school basketball coach struggling with grief and alcoholism. He tries to overcome his personal issues by dedicating himself to his team. Although the film didn’t perform well in theaters because of the COVID-19 pandemic, critics generally liked it.

I was so thrilled to see how well-received The Way Back was – an 85% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes is fantastic! It really showed how skilled Ben Affleck is at crafting personal stories with sports as a backdrop, and I have a feeling his new film, Running, will be just as compelling. Right now, details are pretty scarce – Deadline hasn’t revealed much since it’s still early in development. I’m really hoping this project takes off and we get to see it made! It’ll also be interesting to see if Apple decides to give it a proper cinema release, like Amazon MGM did with The Accountant 2.
