He confirmed the movie will cover significant events from the poem, including Odysseus’s journey home after the Trojan War. The script includes well-known scenes like the Trojan Horse, encounters with the Sirens, and the battle with the Cyclops. As Damon put it, “If the script says you’re being chased by a Cyclops, you’re going to be running!”

I was absolutely blown away hearing about the sheer size of this production! Damon told me about building a full Trojan horse – a real, massive horse! He said the first time he saw it on the beach, his jaw just dropped. He even used a pretty strong word to describe how cool it was! They started filming with it almost immediately, and he remembered asking Nolan how they were even going to pull off those scenes. Typical Nolan, he just laughed and said they’d figure it out as they went – it’s that kind of fearless approach that makes him so amazing.

I was really excited to hear Damon talk about how they’re handling the classic scenes from the Odyssey! He mentioned the part where Odysseus is tied to the mast while sailing past the Sirens – and apparently, it’s in the movie! He said if you’re going to have a moment where Odysseus questions everything while strapped to a mast, this is it. He also made it clear that Chris Columbus didn’t shy away from showing all the challenges Odysseus faces – everything is right there in the script.

The movie was filmed in locations around the world and featured scenes shot on the open sea. It required a massive effort, with thousands of extras and elaborate sets, including a full-scale replica of the Trojan horse. Matt Damon described working on the film as the highlight of his career. This project is his third time working with director Christopher Nolan, following their collaborations on Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
