After a five-year absence, SHIELD is coming back to Marvel Comics. Along with its return, fans are getting a first look at a redesigned Nick Fury Jr. While Fury’s appearance has remained fairly consistent in recent comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’ll be sporting some changes when he appears in the upcoming issues.
Marvel announced that the organization SHIELD will return in the January 2026 issue of Captain America (#6). This is the first time SHIELD has been reintroduced since its disbandment in the 2017 Secret Empire storyline, and a new version of Nick Fury Jr. will be in charge.
Marvel announced SHIELD’s comeback and shared a first look at Nick Fury’s updated appearance. He’ll have a new eye patch, a more colorful outfit—a departure from his usual black—and an overall refreshed style. Fans can expect to see a visually different Fury as he works to rebuild SHIELD’s influence.

A recent image revealed Nick Fury Jr.’s new look, featuring a blue button-down shirt, black vest, tie, and jacket. The jacket’s lining is a bright blue, adding a pop of color to his outfit.
Fury will be wearing short black boots with blue lining, matching his jacket. He’s also wearing black gloves that also have blue accents, consistent with the rest of his outfit.

A new picture shows Nick Fury Jr. without his jacket, giving a clearer view of his blue shirt. It also reveals a white gun holster around his waist – the standard type used by SHIELD agents to conceal weapons. It looks like Fury is continuing this practice from the previous SHIELD organization.
Nick Fury is instantly recognizable thanks to his iconic eye patch, appearing in both comic books and movies. That’s why it might be surprising to learn that he won’t be wearing it in the upcoming issue of Captain America #6.

Instead of his usual eyepatch, Fury will wear regular glasses with one lens completely blacked out. This will achieve the same visual effect as the eyepatch. While it serves the same function, Marvel is making this change to a well-known element of Fury’s iconic look.

While some promotional images show Nick Fury without a hat, it seems he won’t be wearing one consistently. Interestingly, Marvel also released a picture of Fury sporting a black beret. This image also showcased a full beard, a change from his usual goatee. It appears Fury is letting his facial hair grow out completely this time around.
Nick Fury’s appearance has changed a few times over the years in Marvel comics and the movies (where Samuel L. Jackson portrays him). But his next look seems like the biggest change yet, altering some of the most recognizable parts of his design.

Fury is best known for his outfit, which includes a long black coat, a black shirt, and several holsters attached to a tactical belt. He also wears durable military-style pants and combat boots.
As we’ve seen, the new version of Fury prominently uses the color blue. The previous design was much more subdued, mainly featuring black, dark navy, or brown. This brighter blue might suggest a shift in Fury’s personality or reflect changes within SHIELD. It’s also possible it’s just a fresh look.

You know, when it comes to Fury’s look, he hasn’t always been rocking the all-black thing. I remember seeing him in a suit before – it was black, but with these cool red lines running through it, and a red SHIELD logo. Definitely a memorable outfit!

Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe initially mirrored his comic book appearance, featuring an all-black outfit. He wore this costume for many years, but the Disney+ series Secret Invasion introduced a change to his look.

Throughout the series, Nick Fury often dressed in everyday clothes because the situation required it. In one instance, he was seen wearing a red sweater and a dark gray beanie. He also went without an eye patch, clearly showing his injury.

Despite a recent comic book update that adds some blue to his outfit, Fury’s appearance is still very close to his all-black look from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He continues to wear the signature jacket and black pants, along with his boots and some version of an eye patch.
What Happened to SHIELD & Why Is Nick Fury Reviving It?
The upcoming issue of Captain America (#6) will mark the official return of SHIELD, which has been inactive since 2017’s Secret Empire storyline. In that story, SHIELD was forced to shut down after being infiltrated and taken over by HYDRA, a dangerous organization attempting global domination. Shutting down SHIELD was a necessary step to prevent HYDRA from fully succeeding.
Even after SHIELD fell apart, Nick Fury remained active. He’s continued to be a major character in comics, developing his own story that ultimately led him to start putting the team back together.
Fury is now working more discreetly. This updated SHIELD is expected to be a smaller, more intense operation, which fits with how he and Maria Hill have been independently managing missions for some time.
After SHIELD started investigating the reappearance of the Infinity Stones, Fury went rogue. He teamed up with Nighthawk to collect them, but unbeknownst to him, Nighthawk was secretly controlling him. Once Fury broke free from this control and his mind recovered, he defeated Nighthawk and managed to put the people possessing the Infinity Stones into a suspended state.
Following that incident, Nick Fury became embroiled in a conflict with the Skrulls, a race he frequently clashes with, and ultimately lost to them. The Skrulls then used technology to steal Fury’s face, allowing them to disguise themselves and infiltrate the government by replacing important people.
Both Fury and Maria Hill were captured and tortured by the Skrulls. However, the Maria Hill who was captured wasn’t the real one – she was a Skrull operative working alongside the genuine Maria Hill and the Avengers. Eventually, Hill and the Avengers rescued Fury and stopped the Skrulls.
Since SHIELD fell apart, Nick Fury has been quietly assembling a team of talented, but potentially morally ambiguous, individuals. The upcoming Captain America comic will feature characters like Joe Ramos, Charles Castlemore, Trevor Tambling, and Red Widow as part of this new group. While they might not be traditional heroes, that fits with Nick Fury’s own complicated history in the Marvel Universe.
The upcoming issue of Captain America (#6) probably won’t reveal how Nick Fury originally formed SHIELD. Instead, Marvel will likely delve into the details of this new version of the organization in later comics. There’s even a possibility we’ll see a comic series focused entirely on SHIELD sometime soon.
