Why Netflix Should Stop Trying to Recreate Game of Thrones’ Success

Netflix has been trying hard to recreate the massive popularity of Game of Thrones, but it’s time to accept that it’s not going to happen. Game of Thrones was a huge cultural hit – the final season alone averaged 44.2 million viewers per episode. It’s understandable, then, that after the show ended, Netflix and others tried to capture that same audience.

It seemed simple enough to create a new show like Game of Thrones. The series combined fantasy with political intrigue, a popular mix in books. All Netflix needed was a compelling fantasy book series, turn it into a TV show, and watch the audience come. But replicating Game of Thrones‘ success has proven much harder than expected.

Netflix’s Biggest Fantasy TV Shows Have Failed

Ever since Game of Thrones became incredibly popular, Netflix has tried several times to create a show with a similar feel. Series like Shadow and Bone, Cursed, and Marco Polo all showed promise, but unfortunately, none of them managed to attract a large enough audience and were all canceled after just one or two seasons.

Netflix briefly came close to finding a show that could fill the void left by Game of Thrones. The Witcher, based on a popular book series, seemed like a strong contender. It featured political intrigue, exciting magic, a talented cast, and fantastical creatures. The first season actually did quite well, and for a while, it looked like Netflix had finally succeeded.

Netflix’s The Witcher quickly lost momentum. Season two wasn’t well-received, and fans criticized the show for straying too far from the original books and games. While Game of Thrones faced similar issues and still managed to continue, the departure of Henry Cavill ultimately sealed the fate of The Witcher.

Season four of The Witcher was much more faithful to the books, and Liam Hemsworth did a good job as Geralt. Unfortunately, the show lost too much ground with earlier seasons. It’s unlikely The Witcher will ever reach the popularity of Game of Thrones, so Netflix should probably end the series now.

Why Netflix Is Unlikely Ever To Duplicate Game Of Thrones’ Success

Netflix doesn’t typically spend as much money on shows as HBO, and its production quality generally isn’t as high. Because fantasy series are costly to make, a failed show could be a major loss. While other streamers, such as Prime Video, have invested heavily in projects like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, they haven’t yet reached the same level of quality as Game of Thrones.

Even HBO hasn’t been able to recreate the massive success of Game of Thrones. While House of the Dragon is popular, it hasn’t reached the same heights. Looking back, Game of Thrones seems like a truly unique phenomenon. And it’s unlikely Netflix will be the one to fill its shoes.
