It appears a previously rumored superhero won’t be in the next Batman movie. This film, starring Robert Pattinson, will be director Matt Reeves’ second standalone Batman story, existing outside the main DC Universe as part of DC Studios’ new ‘Elseworlds’ line. While fans are hoping to see many of Batman’s familiar allies appear, it seems unlikely for this upcoming film.
Recent comments from Matt Reeves, director of The Batman 2, suggest that Robin won’t be in the upcoming film. Arthur Mintz, director of a Dynamic Duo documentary, revealed that Reeves had long been interested in telling a Robin story, but believed animation was the best approach. This idea gained momentum when a script pitch from a writer who worked on Disney and Pixar’s Coco was well-received by the team.
Matt Reeves always envisioned telling a Robin story, and he felt this was the perfect way to do it. He reached out to us, and we started developing it with him. The writer of ‘Coco’ came back with an amazing script idea that we all loved. Honestly, when you’re building a company, you get excited about anything promising. We were so eager for new ideas that even a silly concept – like celery sticks robbing a bank – would have felt great!
Reeves’ preference for telling a Robin story through animation, instead of a live-action film, likely means we won’t see the Boy Wonder in The Batman – Part 2.
Chris Armand, a lead at Swaybox Studios (the team who created the visuals for Dynamic Duo), praised Keanu Reeves for his encouragement during the film’s production. This came after Reeves and others told the team, “We like that, keep doing that – that’s what works best.”
We often found that clients would initially praise our creative approach and ask us to replicate it. However, once the project began, they’d often change direction and request something more similar to their own existing style. Matt Reeves and 6th & Idaho were different – they genuinely appreciated our unique vision and encouraged us to continue working in that vein, which felt really good.
Robert Pattinson is set to return as Batman in a sequel to his 2022 film. Currently in development, the movie will also star Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. The Batman – Part 2 is scheduled for release in theaters on October 1, 2027.
Who Will Appear in The Batman 2 in Robin’s Absence?

It’s been nearly thirty years since a proper live-action Robin appeared in a DC movie, with the last attempt being in the 1997 film Batman & Robin. While Joseph Gordon-Levitt played a character named James Blake in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, his connection to the Robin identity wasn’t fully realized – he was revealed to be Robin only at the very end and never actually became a costumed hero.
Although Robin won’t be appearing in The Batman 2, the rest of the cast promises to deliver an exciting story. Director Matt Reeves has hinted that the sequel will explore new territory for Batman, potentially offering a fresh take on the character unlike anything seen before.
Batman will be up against a brand new villain in his next movie, alongside familiar foes like the Penguin and potentially the Joker. Although Robin isn’t expected to appear in a DC film until James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold, fans are eager to find out if and when he’ll become part of the larger DC Studios story.
