I’ve been a fan of Daniel Craig for ages! Most people probably know him as James Bond – I remember being blown away by him in Casino Royale way back when – but he’s seriously talented in so many other roles. I especially love him as Detective Benoit Blanc in the Knives Out movies, and his recent performance in Queer was just stunning, honestly. It’s no surprise he’s a huge star and always working, but it’s good to hear he makes time for himself too.
Craig enjoys playing video games to unwind. Though he’s a huge fan of the Halo series on Xbox, he plays many other games as well. He’s happy to discuss his gaming hobby, but admits he has a few ‘guilty pleasure’ games, one of which might surprise people.
Daniel Craig Loves This Fan Favorite GTA Game, But It’s A Guilty Pleasure
The Grand Theft Auto series has always sparked debate. Its games are well-known for their violence and allow players to act out criminal activities in a free-form world. While players do make choices, it’s very difficult to play a GTA game without resorting to violence, whether it’s killing characters or physically assaulting them.
All Grand Theft Auto games are rated ‘M for Mature 17+’ and are definitely not intended for children. They’re fictional stories, and playing them doesn’t say anything about a person’s character. However, playing for a long time can leave some people feeling uneasy, as even actor Daniel Craig has experienced.
Craig enjoys playing Vice City, a well-loved game from the GTA series. With its 1980s setting, it’s a natural choice for an actor wanting to unwind with a fun game. However, Craig can’t spend unlimited time gaming, even with a favorite like Vice City.
Craig said that while he can play very violent games for about half an hour, he eventually feels uncomfortable. He used Vice City as an example, explaining that after doing things like stealing a lot of cars, he feels like he’s had enough.
It’s perfectly fine to enjoy a little escapism through things like video games. However, it’s easy to see why Daniel Craig felt uncomfortable after repeatedly performing actions like stealing and violence within a game – even against non-player characters. Most games cast you as a fundamentally good person, so even when you do questionable things, it’s typically for a justifiable reason, like self-defense or protecting others.
Unlike previous games, GTA often feels pointless – players might question the reasons behind their actions. Some, like the character Craig, even feel a bit uneasy while playing, but the game provides a harmless and fun outlet to experience those feelings.
Many Players Rate Vice City As The Best Game In The GTA Franchise
Even with some criticism around its content and the Grand Theft Auto series as a whole, Vice City is widely considered a masterpiece by both critics and players. Experts in the gaming industry also recognize Vice City as a hugely important and influential game from the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube generation.
The original Vice City was the first Grand Theft Auto game set in a fictional city inspired by Miami, Florida. The city proved incredibly popular with players, leading to a prequel, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, in 2006. However, fans haven’t been back to Vice City in a GTA game since then. That’s about to change with the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which will bring players back to this beloved and iconic location.
Beyond the fantastic reviews and awards, and the exciting new city of Vice City, the game’s impressive cast of celebrity voice actors made GTA: Vice City truly unforgettable. A surprising number of well-known actors brought the characters to life, including Philip Michael Thomas, famous for Miami Vice, who played the key character Lance Vance. He wasn’t the only celebrity involved in voicing characters for the game.
The game’s cast includes several familiar faces, notably Danny Trejo (voicing Umberto Robina), William Fichtner (as Ken Rosenberg), and Tom Sizemore (as Sonny Forelli), all of whom appeared in Michael Mann’s 1995 film, Heat. Ray Liotta voices Tommy Vercetti, and the cast also features Burt Reynolds as Avery Carrington, Gary Busey as Phil Cassidy, Dennis Hopper as Steve Scott, and Jenna Jameson as Candy Suxxx.
The game featured not only amazing voice acting, but many characters were also designed to look like their actors. For instance, Umberto Robina is strikingly similar in appearance to Danny Trejo. This attention to detail makes GTA: Vice City feel more cinematic, potentially explaining why Craig, despite usually avoiding violent games, found it appealing.
Daniel Craig admitted to feeling conflicted after spending a lot of time playing Grand Theft Auto, but it’s easy to understand why he found it so appealing. GTA: Vice City is a truly remarkable game, and immersing yourself in its detailed and memorable world as a character like Tommy Vercetti is a powerful experience. It’s that kind of open-world freedom that’s hard for any gamer to resist.
Maybe going back to Vice City will be enough to get Craig excited about the Miami-inspired setting again. However, he’ll have to be patient since the game is still in development. Hopefully, Craig won’t be too discouraged when GTA VI is finally released, and he can enjoy playing Halo in the meantime.
