Early reviews are starting to surface for Nicolas Cage’s new film, The Carpenter’s Son, but critics seem divided. While the movie blends biblical themes with horror, it’s unclear if that’s enough to win them over. The story follows a carpenter, played by Cage, and his family as they’re terrorized by a mysterious force in a secluded Egyptian village. Noah Jupe and FKA Twigs also star.
Currently, the horror movie The Carpenter’s Son has a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 12 critic reviews. This means the film is currently considered “rotten” by the site, though the score may change as more reviews are published.
Reviews for The Carpenter’s Son are generally unfavorable, particularly because of its horror-focused take on the story of Jesus Christ. While the film has been praised for its scary visuals and violence, many critics find it slow-paced and lacking in excitement when portraying the biblical narrative.
Gregory Nussen from ScreenRant agreed with many others about the movie The Carpenter’s Son, noting that the first two acts were very slow and filled with symbolism that didn’t quite come across effectively. He also felt that Nicolas Cage and Mia Goth’s performances didn’t fit the horror genre, while Jacob Tremblay, playing The Boy, was a standout performance.
Nicolas Cage’s upcoming film, The Carpenter’s Son, will be his last, scheduled for release in 2025. This comes after a somewhat uneven year for the actor. He began with the well-received The Surfer, earning an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but his next movie, Gunslingers, was poorly received by both critics and audiences, with scores of only 5% and 19% respectively.
| Nicolas Cage’s 2025 Movies | Rotten Tomatoes’ Critical Score | Audience Score |
|---|---|---|
| The Surfer | 84% | 47% |
| Gunslingers | 5% | 19% |
| The Carpenter’s Son | 33% | N/A |
However, The Carpenter’s Son was already facing criticism even before its release. The film’s depiction of Jesus Christ, combined with horror elements and strong language, worried some Christians who feared it would disrespect religious beliefs. This led to calls for a boycott after the trailer was released. Critics shared similar concerns, suggesting the film might not appeal to either religious viewers or fans of traditional horror.
I’m still amazed by how much Nicolas Cage works! It seems like he’s always got something new coming out. Right now, there are at least three films on the horizon. I’m especially excited about The Prince and the Madden biopic, both of which are already being edited. And get this – he’s currently shooting a historical spy thriller called Fortitude with Simon West directing. Seriously, the guy’s a machine!
The Carpenter’s Son will have a limited theatrical release on November 14, 2025.
