Tyler Perry’s newest project is already proving popular with streaming viewers, arriving just as the holidays begin. While Perry is famous for his character Mabel “Madea” Simmons, he’s recently created some compelling dramas, like the World War II film The Six Triple Eight and the TV series Beauty in Black. His latest, Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy, is now officially a success.
This holiday drama centers around a designer whose life is turned upside down by a shocking discovery while stuck in Colorado. It follows her journey to find love and happiness. “Finding Joy” was written by Perry and features Shannon Thornton, along with Tosin Morohunfola, Brittany S. Hall, Inayah, Aaron O’Connell, Eric Stanton Betts, and Jeffery Thomas Johnson.
The new movie Finding Joy quickly became the most popular title on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. It started streaming on November 5th and reached the No. 1 spot within a week, according to Flixpatrol. It’s currently more popular than classics like How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey. Rounding out the top five are Wicked at No. 3 (available to rent or buy), the holiday film Red One at No. 4, and Hedda at No. 5.
Including viewership from TV platforms, “Finding Joy” is performing better than two popular returning series on the streaming service: “Maxton Hall – The World Between Us” and “Hazbin Hotel,” which previously topped the global charts when its second season launched. Despite being a fairly standard holiday comedy-drama, the involvement of creator Perry and their strong writing skills are clearly drawing in a loyal audience, regardless of the show’s subject matter.
The new movie, Finding Joy, isn’t getting great reviews (and doesn’t have a Rotten Tomatoes score yet), currently scoring a 4.5 out of 10 on IMDb. However, similar to the modestly-received The Six Triple Eight (which has a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences seem to be enjoying Finding Joy for what it is. While the earlier film focused on telling an important true story, Finding Joy offers the feel-good humor and warmth you’d expect from a lighthearted holiday movie.
Despite some imperfections, Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy proved to be a popular choice on Amazon over the weekend of November 8th and 9th. Perry isn’t slowing down either, with plans for a third Why Did I Get Married? movie and other projects. He’s likely to remain a successful filmmaker, consistently drawing large audiences even if critics aren’t always impressed.
