‘One Time I Forgot To Move The Jergens.’ Bill Maher Just Admitted Tabloids Claiming He Used To Masturbate On Set Were Not Wrong

Bill Maher is known for sharing personal details, but he recently revealed a particularly surprising story. He confirmed a decades-old rumor that he sometimes dealt with personal needs right before filming episodes of his 1990s show, Politically Incorrect, to stay on schedule. Maher admitted the story is true and even recalled the specific product that inadvertently exposed him.

Bill Maher recently addressed a rumor on his YouTube podcast, Club Random. During a conversation with guest Hines Ward, the discussion shifted to tabloid stories. When Ward asked why the tabloids claimed he engaged in inappropriate behavior on set, Maher simply shrugged and gave a direct answer.

Because I did. [laughing]

The HBO executive then described what things were like back then. He said that because Politically Incorrect filmed several days a week, he was very energetic and often tired, sometimes even needing a quick nap before the show. He had a specific routine he followed that always helped him feel ready to go.

Back in the nineties, we filmed regularly, a few days each week. I was often out late, socializing and partying, which left me exhausted. I found that if I quickly relieved myself sexually, I could usually grab a nap. I vaguely remember one time forgetting to wash off some Jergens lotion after using the bathroom.

Hines, always playing the role of the sensible one, pointed out that thankfully, the incident was contained to the bathroom. Maher, predictably, couldn’t help but make a joke about Bill Clinton afterward, saying:

I said the same thing to Bill Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky situation – that he handled it pretty well.

The talk show host also dismissed the stranger details that had been added to the story over time—specifically, the claim about a sock being part of it. He explained those additions were just writers exaggerating an already scandalous tale, and concluded by saying:

They fabricated the story – it’s what writers do, they add details and embellishments. Like the bit about the sock, or claiming I was thinking about Putin. It’s all made up, part of their creative process.

Bill Maher has always been known for his blunt honesty, a trait that made his show Politically Incorrect successful and now defines the freewheeling atmosphere of Club Random. It’s typical for him to address sensational stories with a surprising confession – one that’s both straightforward and attention-grabbing. And in this case, he’s certainly achieved that goal.

The story is intentionally chaotic, but it also subtly highlights the exhausting routine of making TV shows – the constant need to perform and the strange habits people develop to cope. True to form, the comedian embraces the mess, openly references everyday products, and jokes about being unpolished and real.

As a movie and TV buff, I’m always checking out streaming options, and HBO Max is definitely one to consider. You can get a subscription starting at just $10.99 a month – that’s the basic plan with ads. For that price, you get access to a huge library of stuff, including shows like Real Time with Bill Maher, plus tons of movies, documentaries, and everything in between. It’s a pretty great deal if you’re looking for a lot of content.

If you’re curious if this story is made up, it’s actually true. The comedian explained that he needed to use the restroom right before filming, and it was obvious something had happened because he’d left a bottle of Jergens lotion behind as evidence.

Bill Maher hosts the show Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday nights. You can also watch it later by streaming it with an HBO Max subscription.
