2027’s Star Wars Movie Fulfills Matt Smith’s Destiny After Canceled Role

Director Shawn Levy recently discussed an upcoming Star Wars movie slated for 2027. He suggested the film will give Matt Smith the opportunity to play the role he was originally intended for, after a previous attempt was canceled.

Star Wars finally gives Matt Smith a chance to shine after scrapped role

Shawn Levy says filming for Star Wars: Starfighter is a bit more than halfway finished. He’s called the process amazing, challenging, and exciting.

According to ScreenRant, the director believes the film completes a path he envisioned for Matt Smith in the Star Wars universe. Smith was initially cast to play a younger Emperor Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker, but the part was cut during the script-rewriting process before production began.

Levy mentioned reading reports and then getting the full story from multiple sources, adding that the actor feels this role was meant to be. Smith will be part of a cast including Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. Photos from the set reveal Gosling and Gray’s characters in action, and the film is set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

Levy praised Ryan Gosling, calling him both a talented actor and a fantastic collaborator. He also shared that working with actors like Anya Taylor-Joy, Jaden Smith, and Adam Driver has been even more rewarding than he expected. Filming with Jaden Smith will begin in December, as the team puts the finishing touches on his costume and character.

Initial reports indicate Will Smith and Mia Goth will play the villains in the new Star Wars film, which fits with earlier speculation about Smith’s character being connected to Palpatine. This movie will be the second Star Wars film released in theaters since 2019, coming after The Mandalorian & Grogu, set to premiere on May 22, 2026.

The new Star Wars film, Starfighter, will arrive in cinemas on May 28, 2027. Shawn Levy directed the movie and also served as a producer, working with Kathleen Kennedy.
